Abstract: A process is provided for effecting separation by flotation of a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite of the molecular sieve type from an aqueous salt solution, such as mother liquor, or from an aqueous slurry containing amorphous contaminant with which said zeolite is intermixed. It has been found that crystalline aluminosilicate zeolites have a specific affinity for air bubbles and rise to the surface in the froth produced during flotation and are thus separated from residual components.

Abstract: A flocculant, according to embodiments of the present disclosure, includes a core nanoparticle and at least one positively charged functional group on a surface of the core nanoparticle. The nanoparticle may comprise a silica, alumina, titania, iron oxide, iron nitride, iron carbide, or a carbon-based nanoparticle. The flocculant may be used, in a method of bitumen recovery, to neutralize and agglomerate bitumen droplets and/or mineral particles derived from oil sands ore. The bitumen droplets agglomerate about the core nanoparticle of the flocculant to form bitumen flocs, while the mineral particles agglomerate about the core nanoparticle of the flocculant to form mineral flocs. The buoyant bitumen flocs may then separate from the dense mineral flocs to enable high-yield recovery of bitumen from oil sands.

Abstract: A tailings pond sludge layer of high density and strength is obtained by treating the sludge with an additive selected from a specific family of hydrolized starch additives which impart improved permeability and shear strength characteristics to the sludge. Thereafter, the sludge is mixed with sand which adds self-weight whereby further dewatering of the sludge sand mixture is accomplished. Unlike untreated sludges or sludges treated with other known additives or flocculants, sludge treated with the aforementioned hydrolyzed starch additives is able to support the sand.
