    Abstract: The welding of the body and of the ring with the distributor of a steam turbine diaphragm is carried out in four different areas holding an assembly, formed by two semi-diaphragms, in a substantially vertical position, at most tilted a few degrees off vertical, while four welding units operate simultaneously, two for each face of the assembly, providing for each assembly face to be suitably heated. Two supports are provided, one movable in respect to the other for positioning and handling of the assembly to be treated. Provision is made for vertically adjusting the assembly position with respect to a referring surface, so that the area on which each welding unit works is always on the same level, whatever the dimensions of the assembly to be welded. Provision is also made for heating and insulating both the assembly faces.

    Abstract: A method and an apparatus for welding an impeller by using TIG process are provided in which one of the blades to be welded to a side plate or shroud plate is disposed so as to form a V-channel with the plate, the V-channel being oriented to face upwardly, and a torch head supported at the tip of a torch rod is placed above a weld line produced by the intersection of the blade and the plate so as to contact the inner surface of the V-channel keeping a proper distance between the tip of the tungsten electrode encased within the torch head and the weld line on which a filler wire of suitable length is disposed. The opposite end of the torch rod is mounted on a translating mechanism through a universal joint so as to move the torch head along and above the weld line and electric current is supplied between the weld line on which the filler wire is disposed and the electrode while simultaneously supplying an inert gas through the nozzle during the movement of the nozzle, the nozzle keeping in contact with the inner surface of the V-channel due to gravity.

    Abstract: A fushion welded surfacing process for use with crack prone substrates is described. The process involves the application of an intermediate layer of crack resistant alloy by fusion welding followed by the application of the desired final surfacing alloy by fusion welding. The intermediate layer is an age hardenable nickel superalloy to which intentional additions of manganese have been made. The final surfacing alloy may be of the hardfacing type or may be of a type which imparts corrosion and oxidation resistance to the underlying article.

    Abstract: An improved welding chill is formed by covering a surface area of a part opposite from an area which is to be welded, with a body of powdered metal. The body of powdered metal is sintered while it is in engagement with the surface area of the part. This results in the accurate formation of a sintered metal chill member which is gas pervious, that is a chill member with spaces through which gas can flow. During a welding operation, an inert gas is conducted through the chill member to the surface area of the part against which the chill member is pressed to retard oxidation of the surface area.

    Abstract: A method for manufacturing a turbine rotor assembly from dissimilar materials includes the step of preforming a turbine disc of powdered metal by direct hot isostatic pressing; machining the OD of the disc rim to an exact dimension; prefabricating a ring of airfoil elements having a circular rim with a machined ID therein fit to the OD of the turbine disc; sealing joint lines on side surfaces of the joined parts to create a vacuum at the interface with a high melt temperature sealant; thereafter diffusion bonding the joined and sealed parts by hot isostatically pressing them at temperatures in excess of 1500.degree. F. and under fluid pressure directly applied to the parts in excess of 1000 psi to press the ring ID into intimate contact with the OD of the disc until the dissimilar materials are diffusion bonded to form a high strength butt joint therebetween.

    Abstract: This friction welding method employs a floating shroud in the tail stock of the welder that provides radial support of a workpiece having thin or fragile portions. There is limited shroud rotation relative to the tail stock during the welding process so that torsional forces generated during friction welding will not be transmitted from the workpieces through the shroud to the tail stock. This allows the workpieces to be joined without destruction or damage by the friction welding process. The shroud has a plurality of segments facilitating easy removal of the workpieces from the tail stock.
