The rotating cylinder for processing a web material comprises an essentially rigid cylindrical core (13), on which is fitted an interchangeable sleeve (45) of elastically expandable material whose rigidity is less than that of the material of the core; the sleeve is axially and angularly fixable to the core and is provided on its outer surface with a relief pattern. For each end of the cylinder, there is provided at least one corresponding mechanical locking member which can be fixed to the corresponding end of the core of the cylinder and which interacts with the corresponding end of the interchangeable sleeve to lock the interchangeable sleeve angularly with respect to the core of the cylinder.

An embossing device for embossing a single-ply or multi-ply web of tissue paper comprises a first steel roll (12) with embossing protuberances (24, 26) on its peripheral surface and a second roll (14) with a yielding layer (32) on its peripheral surface. The second roll cooperates with the steel roll (12) so as to form an embossing nip (20) therewith. The steel roll (12) and the second roll (14) run in synchronisation. The second roll (14) has individual zones (30) on its peripheral surface with a higher overall thickness and/or different material characteristics of the yielding layer (32; 32, 34) compared to that of the remaining peripheral surface. These individual zones (30) are opposed in the embossing nip (20) to embossing protuberances of the steel roll (12).

The invention relates to a multi-ply tissue paper product (10) and a method for producing same. The multi-ply tissue paper comprises at least three embossed plies (12, 14, 16) of paper, wherein a first outer ply (12) has a first microstructure pattern (18) with first protuberances with a density of more than 40 protuberances/cm 2 . The second outer ply (14) is provided with a second microstructure pattern (22) also having a density of second protuberances of more than 40 protuberances/cm 2 . A middle ply (16) is sandwiched between the first outer ply (12) and the second outer ply (14) and has a third structure pattern being an embossing pattern with a density of less than 40 protuberances/cm 2 . All three plies are ply bonded (24) together after the first outer ply, the second outer ply and the middle ply have been structured separately.

In one aspect, the invention encompasses a method of utilizing a single engraved embossing roll (12) to emboss different expanses of material (40, 60) with different patterns. The single engraved embossing roll (12) has at least two projections (16, 18) projecting therefrom. A first of the projections (16) projects to a greater height from the roll (12) than a second of the projections (18). In another aspect, the invention encompasses an apparatus (10) for embossing different expanses of material (40, 60) with different patterns. The apparatus (10) includes an engraved surface (12) having at least two projections (16, 18) projecting therefrom. A first of the projections (16) projects to a greater height than a second of the projections (18). The apparatus (10) also includes a backing surface (14) configured to receive the projections (16, 18) of the engraved surface (12). The backing surface (14) and engraved surface (12) are together configured to receive an expanse of material (40, 60) between them. The apparatus (10) further includes a displacement mechanism (30, 32) configured to move at least one of the engraved surface (12) and the backing surface (14) relative to the other of the engraved surface (12) and the backing surface (14).
