Abstract:
Described is a metallized article, and a method for making the same, comprising a substrate having a polyurethane basecoat disposed thereon and with a layer of electrically discrete metallic islands of a corrosion prone metal disposed on the basecoat. A cross-linked polyurethane top coat, which is bound to an organosilane, preferably an epoxy silane, is disposed on and encapsulates the discrete metallic islands. The organosilane is also bound to the metallic islands.
Abstract:
A method of continuously producing a continuous paint coat of substantially constant, pre-determined thickness, and displaying a plural colour, familial, non-modular pattern, on a surface of a moving substrate, comprising the steps of depositing at least two discontinuous, randomly patchy, differently coloured, component paint deposits, at a predetermined constant long term deposition rate for each component deposit in terms of the volume of paint per unit area of the surface, within a single stationary target area of the surface, or within stationary target areas of the surface respectively associated with the component deposits and at least partly aligned in the direction of movement of the substrate, and thereafter spreading and smoothing the component paint deposits carried by the substrate from the target area or areas, to form the continuous coat.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an improved method for making a solar control sheet having one or more metal layers (6). In the prior art solar control sheets, each metal layer would normally be non-porous so that water vapor would not be readily transmitted therethrough. However, in this invention the metal layer is rendered porous because it is deposited on a porosity inducing surface (7). The porosity inducing surface may be the surface of a porous primer layer or a surface which has been roughened. Consequently, when the solar control film of this invention is mounted on a window with a water-based mounting media, the water can quickly evaporate through the film without causing undesirable cloudiness which is normally associated with water which becomes trapped between the film and the window.
Abstract:
A thermoplastic and thermoformable pigment-containing metallic automotive paint is solvent cast and dried to form a finished automotive paint coat for a decorative film used in a thermoforming process to form an exterior paint layer on a molded plastic automotive body panel (16). The paint coat (26) contains a pigment uniformly dispersed in a polymeric binder material preferably comprising an alloy of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) copolymer and an acrylic resin in which the PVDF copolymer is provided as a dispersion in the acrylic resin. Preferably, the dispersed form of the PVDF copolymer has a maximum particle size less than about 35 microns, and more preferably 20 microns, with a mean particle size range of 6 to 10 microns. The dispersion ratio is preferably from 80 % to 20 % PVDF copolymer and from 20 % to 80 % acrylic resin, respectively, by weight. A low molecular weight form of the PVDF copolymer is preferred and characterized by a melt viscosity of 17,000 to 20,000 centipoise at 230 DEG C. Reflective flakes (28) are uniformly dispersed in the polymeric dispersion material and the dispersion form of the PVDF copolymer inhibits parallel orientation of the reflective flakes to produce a more random orientation that achieves a metallic appearance similar to standard spray painted metallic paint coats.
Abstract:
It comprises first cleaning the surface to be treated, particularly aluminium shapes and sheets, with substances such as trichloroethylene, and drying the surface. Then, solvents are applied in order to soften the surface and a chemical treatment by brushing, stamping or spraying chemical solvents with pigments. Finally, the surface is dried and a varnishing treatment is applied.
Abstract:
Resinous multi-level sheeting such as vinyl floor covering is prepared by: providing a backing material (1) with a layer of foamable resin containing a blowing agent (3); applying to a portion (9) of the surface of the layer a composition containing an accelerator which lowers the temperature at which the blowing agent decomposes and applying to part (7) of the other portion of the surface a composition containing an inhibitor which decreases the activity of the blowing agent; and raising the temperature of the foamable resin with the compositions added to a level such that the resin fuses and the blowing agent decomposes, the decomposition causing expansion of the foamable resin to the greatest extent where the accelerator has been applied (9), to a lesser extend where no accelerator or inhibitor has been applied (11), and to only a limited extent where the inhibitor has been applied (7).
Abstract:
A multiple nozzle coating apparatus (10) and method which simultaneously propels a plurality of coating compositions in substantially overlapping coating patterns. The coating compositions are formulated with a viscosity and rheology control agent to have sufficient wet strength to stand alone and not flow or readily mix with itself when applied under non-atomizing conditions. A separate nozzle (42) is provided for each of the viscous coating compositions configured to create overlapping coverage over the area coated. The separate coating nozzles (42) are inclined toward a substantially overlapping coating pattern. The coating compositions (24, 25, 27) and compressed air (28) are delivered to the separate nozzles (42). Ajustable valves are provided for releasing coating compositions (24, 25, 27) and the compressed air (28) from each of nozzles (42) to simultaneously propel coating compositions (24, 25, 27) away from each of the nozzles (42) to form a coat pattern wherein the coating compositions remaining substantially separate after being propelled.
Abstract:
The invention includes a product (10) and a fabrication method for generating one image in the presence of ambient light and a second different image in the absence of ambient light. This invention can use phosphorescent material to form one of the images. This invention is particularly related to puzzles or novelty artwork for children.
