Abstract:
Aqueous dispersions of crystalline polymers based on hydrophobic monomers, preferably on a mixture of hydrophobic and hydrophilic monomers which contains a crosslinking monomer, particularly side chain crystalline (SCC) polymers. The dispersions are useful for providing coatings on substrates, particularly on seeds (whose dormancy is thus extended) and on fibrous substrates, particularly human hair (which thus becomes heat-settable).
Abstract:
A method of preventing corrosion of a metal sheet, comprising the steps of: providing a metal sheet chosen from the group consisting of coated steel sheet, aluminum sheet and aluminum alloy sheet; and applying a solution containing at least one hydrolyzed vinyl silane to the metal sheet. A coating of paint or other polymer may be applied directly on top of the vinyl silane coating.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to several novel compositions and methods employing infrared radiation, microwave radiation or high voltage polymerization for modifying the surfaces of materials to impart desired characteristics thereto. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method for modifying the surfaces of objects to increase the lubricity, hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity, or biofunctionality of the surface of the object.
Abstract:
A composite coating of a water-borne basecoat and an epoxy-acid clearcoat has improved performance characteristics of reduced yellowing or reduced tendency to chip through the formulation of the composite coating and the process for its application. The process comprises applying to the substrate a film-forming composition to form a basecoat and applying to the basecoat an epoxy-acid clear film-forming composition to form a transparent topcoat over the basecoat. The basecoat is a coating composition comprising a polymeric film-forming resin, aminoplast crosslinking agent and a pigment wherein the crosslinking agent is a partially or fully alkylated aminoplast and has a lower or higher imino content. The lower imino content promotes reduced yellowing of the clearcoat and the higher imino content promotes improved chip resistance when the pigment of the water-borne basecoat reduces yellowing effects. The transparent topcoat, or clearcoat, has an epoxy film forming resin and a polycarboxylic acid crosslinking agent.
Abstract:

Abstract:
A process for multi-coat painting in which a first coating of an electrophoretically separable aqueous coating (I) is electrophoretically applied to an electrically conductive substrate and then baked, whereupon further coatings are applied, where the coating agent (I) is such as to provide an electrically conductive coating when baked, whereupon, after the first coating has been baked an electrically insulating second coating of an electrophoretically separable aqueous coating agent (II) differing from (I) is electrophoretically separated and baked, whereupon as a third coating a basic paint coat of a coloured and/or effect-producing coating is applied and covered with a fourth transparent coat of a clear lacquer coating agent and baked together therewith, whereupon one or more further transparent topcoats are applied, in which the total dry coating thickness of the paint system is 90 to 130 mu m and the dry coating thickness of the transparent topcoat or coats is 40 to 80 mu m.
Abstract:
Nanoparticle metal particles having a controllable and narrow size distribution are prepared by electrolessly plating a metal on the interior of a vesicle formed from a mixture of polymerizable charge neutral phospholipids and negatively charged phospholipids. Electroless plating may be accomplished by catalytic reduction of the metal ion or u.v. reduction of the metal ion.
