Abstract: This portable apparatus comprises a housing having a circuit built-in, and an input key, an ultraviolet receptive opening and a display, which are combined with the housing as one body. An ultraviolet sensor is provided in the interior of the ultraviolet receptive opening. This portable apparatus comprises means for receiving characteristic data about a characteristic of a user's skin against a suntan from the input key and measurement data about an ultraviolet ray quantity from the ultraviolet sensor, for predicting a user's suntanned skin condition from these data, and for generating image data for displaying an image about the prediction of user's suntanned skin condition. The image, which is based on image data generated by this means, is displayed on the display, making it possible for the user to confirm the user's skin condition.

Abstract: An optical filtering device incorporates first and second prisms, the latter prism counteracting the angular dispersion of the former prism. A spatial light modulator provides a positionally variable optical stop located to block radiation within a wavelength interval and received from a location within a scene. Unobscured radiation from that and other scene locations passes to a camera, which produces an image on a display. Opaque pixels in the stop are positioned to block unwanted light sources. The invention attenuates potentially dazzling monochromatic radiation while retaining radiation at other wavelengths for imaging purposes.

Abstract: A measuring appts. for short and ultra-short light pulses consists of an arrangement of beam dividers and reflectors for dividing a beam into two pulses, a movable delay element (5, 8) for at least one of the pulses, an optical element (9) for producing a correlation signal for both pulses and a replaceable detection unit (17). The novelty is that the appts. includes an exchangeable plate (13) with optical components (14, 15). Also claimed is a method of analysing short and ultra-short laser pulses using the above appts.. The method involves directing a laser pulse into the above arrangement such that it is divided into two subsidiary pulses which are directed onto the optical element for prodn. of a correlation signal, this signal then being analysed to determine the light frequency and/or the travel time difference between the two subsidiary pulses.

Abstract: A pulsed laser beam of ultra short pulse width is divided (102) into measurement and reference beams. The measurement beam is deflected (103,104) to the object (100) and the reflected light collected, combined (106) with the reference beam and fed to a time gate (107). The distance to the object is derived (108) from the signal generated by the time gate. The combination device deflects the beams along parallel paths to time gate and contains devices which bring the beams into overlap within the time gate.

The order sorting means (131, 132) comprise at least two refractive optical components manufactured from different material. The two refractive optical components (131 and 132) together with the diffraction grating (14) and the imaging optical components (12 and 15) produce a substantially uniform distribution of the order spectra on the detector unit (16). Favourably the order sorting means (131, 132), the diffraction grating (14) and the imaging optical components (12, 15) also co-act to produce a substantially stigmatic image of the entrance aperture (10) in at least one point on the detector unit (16).

[Also in Group XL (b)] A multiple chromator comprises means for obtaining a multiple dispersion of a beam of light before measuring the intensity of a given wavelength. The beam after passing through an entrance slit S 1 is collimated by a paraboloid mirror M 1 to pass through a prism P, and reflected by a plane mirror M 2 to pass again through prism P onto mirror M 1 . By means of two perpendicular plane mirrors M3, M 4 located with the adjacent edge near to the focal curve of mirror M 1 , the beam is turned back to be doubly dispersed again through prism P before reaching the exit slit S 2 . A light-chopper C interrupts the beam after first dispersal to obviate the effect of the first order dispersed light on a tuned detector at the exit slit S 2 . A plurality of pairs of mirrors M 3 , M' may be added to obtain any required number of dispersals through the prism P. The dispersion system may alternatively include a diffraction grating instead of a prism.
