Abstract: Homogeneous grease compositions are prepared by mixing a fluid mineral oil solution containing 10-70% of a carbonated alkaline earth metal sulphonate and/or carboxylate which has at least 12 carbon atoms, was basic before carbonation, and has a metal ratio of at least 4.5, with 1-80%, based on the carbonated salt, of an active hydrogen compound selected from water, water-alcohol mixtures, and lower aliphatic carboxylic acids, at a temperature between 25 DEG C. and the reflux temperature. The carbonated sulphonates may be derived from petroleum or otherwise, and the carbonated carboxylates from aliphatic or aromatic acids, extensive exemplification being given. The carbonated salt may be basic, neutral, or slightly acidic, and may have been prepared by carbonating a basic sulphonate or carboxylate in the presence of a promoting agent selected from alcohols, phenols, mercaptans, amines, enols, and aci-nitro compounds, preferably in the presence of a mineral oil or other hydrocarbon solvent. Many active hydrogen compounds are mentioned, typical being acetic acid, dichloroacetic acid, heptoic acid, and mixtures of water with methanol, ethanol, bromo-octanol, chloro-hexanol, glycerol, diethylene glycol, and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. The resulting greases may be used per se, or as additives to lubricants, cutting oils, fuels, asphalts or caulking compositions.ALSO:Basic alkaline earth metal salts of carboxylic and sulphonic acids having at least 12 carbon atoms are carbonated in the presence of a promoter, and preferably in a hydrocarbon solvent, especially a mineral oil. The promoter may be a phenol, alcohol, mercaptan, amine, enol, or aci-nitro compound. In examples, mixtures of either tall oil acids or petroleum sulphonates with excess metal base (CaO, BaO, Ca(OH)2 or Ba(OH)2) are carbonated in the presence of a promoter selected from heptyl and octyl phenols, and methyl and furfuryl alcohols, the solvent, when present, being mineral oil, to give final products which are basic, neutral, or slightly acidic, and have a metal ratio of at least 4.5.

Abstract: Aqueous lubricant and cutting fluids comprise an alkanolamine, a C6- 12 organic acid, and a polyoxyalkylene glycol. The amine and acid may be present as the salt formed between them. Optional additives mentioned include alkali metal nitrites and hydroxides, sodium mercaptobenzothiazole, phenols including chlorinated phenols, phenates, boric acid, boron oxides, and salts of E.D.T.A., nitrilo-triacetic acid, and diethylene triamine penta-acetic acid. A typical product is an aqueous system containing 20% triethanolamine, 3% 2-ethyl-hexoic acid, and 7% of a 75:25 ethylene oxide/propylene oxide copolymer.
