Abstract:
A lubrication system having an oil filter modified to replace or supplement the performance of lubricant additives that may be used within an internal combustion engine to increase the performance of a lubricant is described. The formulation of the lubricant is changed in accordance with the chemicals placed in the oil filter. For example, when the oil filter contains a strong base, the lubricant concentration of detergent will decrease, in some cases to zero, while the dispersant concentration in the lubricant will increase. The dispersant is the ideal weak base to neutralize combustion acid at the piston ring zone, carry the resultant weak base- combustion acid complex to the strong base in the oil filter, undergo ion exchange with the strong base, immobilize the acid in the oil filter and recycle the dispersant back to the piston ring zone for reuse as an acid neutralization agent. The reduction or elimination of detergent from the lubricant will reduce the fouling of the emission filter and of deposit formation on engine parts such as the piston. The oil filter may also contain an additive which is slowly released into the lubricant. For example, a ZnDDP anti-wear additive may be slowly released from the oil filter to the lubricant. Because the ZnDDP has low molecular weight alkyl groups it has limited solubility in the lubricant. The rate of release is limited by the equilibrium concentration of the additive in the lubricant. As a result, a relatively constant concentration of the additive may be maintained in the lubricant. The resultant closed system allows the oil drain intervals to be significantly extended.

An anti-seize composition which is non-flowable and dimensionally stable at temperatures greater than about 120°F and dispensable at room temperature without the application of heat is provided. The composition includes a solid anti-seize lubricant, such as of metallic copper, metallic nickel, metallic aluminum, metallic lead, metallic zinc, graphite, calcium oxide, calcium carbonate, calcium fluoride, calcium stearate, lithium, molybdenum disulfide, boron nitride, barium sulfate, or combinations thereof. The anti-seize lubricant is dispersed in a carrier which is a solid at about room temperature. The carrier includes a grease with an ASTM D 217 penetration at 25°C from about 200 to about 400 mm, a matrix material, and a naphthenic petroleum oil having a viscosity of less than about 300 SUS at 100°F and having an API gravity at 60°F from about 23 to about 25. The matrix material is a polymeric material. Optionally, a refined petroleum wax may also be included.

A non-toxic biodegradable grease for lubricating mechanisms, which are exposed to high load such as curving rails in railways and wheel flanges on railway cars and locomotives, as well as for lubricating all sorts of equipment working in areas where full biodegradability is required such as in agriculture, forestry, sports areas and marine environments, comprises a glyceride oil, one or more stearates, one or more long chain esters, bentonite, and a meal. Where the grease is exposed to daylight, it usually further comprises an anti-oxidant, and to further enhance the lubricating capacity of the grease a small amount of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) may be added.

According to the invention there is provided a liquid friction control composition characterized as either having a high and positive friction characteristic or a low and neutral friction characteristic, comprising a retentivity agent. The liquid friction control composition may also comprise other components such as a solid lubricant, a wetting agent, a consistency modifier, and a preservative. The liquid friction control compositions may be used to modify the interfacial friction characteristics in sliding and rolling-sliding contact such as steel wheel-rail systems including mass transit and freight systems.
