Abstract:
Compositions for coating steel wire to facilitate the cold drawing thereof comprising:A. from about 50 to about 99.9% by weight of K.sub.2 SO.sub.4 ;B. from about 0 to about 49.99% by weight of K.sub.2 B.sub.4 O.sub.7 and/or KBO.sub.2 ; andC. from about 0.01 to about 5% by weight of an ammonium and/or a potassium soap; wherein up to 50% by weight of the total potassium plus ammonium ions in the composition can be replaced by sodium ions. These compositions form coatings which have good crystalline structure and drawability with low hygroscopicity.

A high performance lubricating grease effectively lubricates and greases front-wheel drive joints. The lubricating grease has excellent extreme pressure properties and antiwear qualities and is economical, effective, and safe. In the preferred form, the lubricating grease comprises a base oil, a polyurea thickener, an additive package comprising tricalcium phosphate and calcium carbonate, and a borated oil-separation inhibitor.
Abstract:
Electroviscous fluids are disclosed which are composed of aluminum silicates particles in an electrically non-conductive liquid and a suitable dispersing agent. The atomic ratio of Al/Si on the surface of the aluminum silicate lies within the range of 0.15 to 0.80.
Abstract:
A friction reducing additive for addition to the lubricating oil crankcase of an internal combustion engine, such as in an automobile, is provided. The additive comprises (a) a hydrocarbon oil of lubricating viscosity; (b) an extreme pressure antiwear agent comprising: (i) an oil dispersion of solid inorganic film-forming potassium borate, (ii) antimony diaklylphosphorodithioate, and (iii) a liquid chlorinated paraffin; (c) an alkaline material; and (d) a viscosity index improver. The preferred additive composition of the present invention also contains an antioxidant and an antifoaming agent.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity having dispersed therein a minor amount of an additive composition comprising a mixture of: (a) a hydrated alkali metal borate; (b) an oil-soluble sulfur-containing compound; and (c) a zirconium salt.
Abstract:
A lubricant composition for use alone or in a lubricating base, comprising a finely divided carbonate of Group IIA metal and a halogenated organic lubricant.
Abstract:
A synthetic metal working lubricant characterized by an absence of mineral oil but which is water immiscible and dispersible in water to form oil-in-water emulsions in which said lubricant is in the discontinuous phase is prepared using polybutenes, also referred to as polyisobutylenes, having an average molecular weight within the range of approximately 320-610 constituting a principal ingredient in combination with polyethylene glycol mono- and/or diesters of higher carboxylic acids or mixtures of such acids containing 8 to 22 carbon atoms in an acyclic or branched carbon chain and/or higher fatty acids containing 8-22 carbon atoms together with optional corrosion inhibiting agents which are effective in inhibiting corrosion of ferrous and non-ferrous metals to which the lubricant is applied for the purpose of working such metals.
Abstract:
An improved lubricating oil composition comprising a major amount by weight of oil of lubricating viscosity; a minor amount by weight of solid particles effective to improve the lubricating properties of the composition; and a minor amount by weight of at least one of certain specific polymers has been found to provide improved inhibition of sludge and varnish formation in use. The polymers useful in the present composition comprise(1) an olefin polymer, for example, an ethylene, propylene and 1,4-hexadiene terepolymer, with an dialkylaminoalkyl methacrylate grafted thereon;(2) an interpolymer prepared from a long chain n alkyl-methacrylate and a dialkylaminoalkylmethacrylate or a N (alkanone) acrylamide; or(3) mixtures thereof.
