Abstract:
A process for producing a cycloolefin resin composition comprising a cycloolefin resin and an additive by using a twin-screw extruder is provided, in which loss of the additive caused by volatilization through a vent during kneading is reduced and kneading of resin material with the additive can be sufficiently carried out. When the cycloolefin resin and the additive are kneaded by using a vented twin-screw extruder (10) to produce the cycloolefin resin composition containing the additive, an additive introduction opening (3) is disposed downstream of a vent (2) located nearest to a discharge opening (13) of the twin-screw extruder, and the additive is charged through the additive introduction opening located at a distance from the discharge opening of the twin-screw extruder in the range between longer than 10D and not longer than 30D.
Abstract:
The invention is directed to a thermoplastic condensation polymer chain extender additive package for reducing the molecular weight loss of a thermoplastic condensation polymer during a heated process comprising a chain extender composition selected from the group consisting of (a) a mixture of a chain extending agent and a water-bearing particulate material (b) a water-bearing particulate material surface treated with a chain extending agent or (c) a combination of (a) and (b). The water-bearing particulate material can be titanium dioxide pigment, the chain extending agent can be a multifunctional epoxy compound and the condensation polymer can be polyethylene terephthalate, polybutylene terephthalate or polycarbonate.
Abstract:
Pigments having magnetic properties are manipulated using magnetic fields to produce color patterns. The color patterns may be created in a medium such as a molten plastic or a plastic solution. Once disposed in the flowable medium, the pigments migrate by the influence of magnets after which the pigments remain static due to the drying and/or hardening of the medium. A molded plastic article comprising oriented effect magnetizable pigments is provided. The article may be used to contain cosmetics, personal care products, or foods.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method for encapsulating an inorganic component in a wax, wherein the method comprises the following steps: i) subjecting the inorganic component to shearing forces such that deagglomeration of the inorganic component takes place, which step is carried out in the presence of the wax, with the wax functioning as a spacer to prevent reagglomeration, ii) subsequently increasing the temperature of the mixture from step i) to a value above the melting temperature of the wax, iii) quickly cooling the mixture obtained in step ii), and finally iv) reducing the solidified mixture from step iii) so as to obtain a wax comprising an inorganic component. The invention further relates to a wax particle obtained by the method and to the use of such wax particles in water-based protection systems.
Abstract:
A method of making a carbon/graphite product using a coal tar pitch having a softening point in the range of about 150° C. to 250° C. Also, a carbon/graphite product having a softening point in the range of about 150° C. to 250° C. A method of making mesophase pitch is formed from quinoline insoluble free coal tar pitch distillate from a high efficiency evaporative distillation process.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for post mixing an additive with a hot melt adhesives. The method includes the steps of providing a source of molten hot melt adhesive, feeding the hot melt adhesive to an inlet of a mixer, simultaneously feeding an additive for the hot melt adhesive to the inlet of the mixer, mixing the additive and molten hot melt adhesive in the mixer to form a homogeneous mixture, and recovering the homogenous mixture. The additive is preferably selected from wetness indicators, antimicrobial agents, pigments, dyes, ultraviolet light absorbers, antioxidants, fluorescent agents, pH indicators and fragrances. The method may be practiced either on a batch basis, or on a continuous basis. The apparatus includes a vessel containing molten hot melt adhesive, a mixer located downstream from the vessel, the mixer having an inlet and an outlet, a first pump located between the vessel and the mixer for pumping molten hot melt adhesive from the vessel to the inlet of the mixer, a source of an additive for the hot melt adhesive, and a second pump located between the source of the additive and the mixer for pumping the additive to the inlet of the mixer. The mixer may comprise either a static mixer or a dynamic mixer.
Abstract:
Described are methods that utilize high efficiency evaporative distillation to make a high softening point coal tar pitch, a quinoline insoluble-free and ash-free coal tar pitch having a desired softening point, and a mesophase coal tar pitch. Each of the methods uses a feed coal tar pitch having a softening point in the range of 70° C. to 160° C. The methods may be carried out using appropriate conventional distillation equipment, a wiped film evaporator, or a thin film evaporator.
Abstract:
A process of dispersing at least one pigment into a carrier such as castor oil or a vegetable wax such as palm oil glyceride wax. The resulting dispersion exhibits excellent color development and is fluid at room temperature. Suitable pigments include FD&C, D&C and inorganic pigments.
Abstract:
A method for making a fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polymer composition and forming a fabricated article therefrom. A thermoplastic polymer, a masterbatch comprising an elastomer and a reinforcing fiber material are compounded, extruded and immediately formed into a fabricated article. The fabricated article is formed by compression molding, vacuum forming, thermoforming, injection molding, blow molding, profile extrusion or combinations thereof.
