Abstract:
A method of making a high softening point coal tar pitch using high efficiency evaporative distillation, as well as the uses and applications of such pitch. According to the method, a feed coal tar pitch having a softening point in the range of 70null C. to 160null C. is fed into a processing vessel wherein the processing vessel is heated to a temperature in the range of 300null C. to 450null C. and wherein a pressure inside the processing vessel is in the range of 5 Torr or less. An output coal tar pitch is withdrawn from the processing vessel. The output coal tar pitch has a softening point in the range of 140null C. to 300null C. and has less than 5% mesophase.
Abstract:
A process for producing a thermoplastic molding composition is disclosed. The process entails introducing a solid polymeric resin, optionally containing residual moisture, into an extruder, operating under conditions designed to melt the resin and charging water into the melt while in the extruder to yield wet, molten resin that contains water in an amount of at least about 2 percent. The wet, molten resin is then devolatilized to yield dry resin having water content not exceeding 0.3 percent. Molding compositions thus produced have improved properties. In a preferred embodiment, the process results in a molding composition that contains a fine dispersion of a discontinuous phase in a continuous polymeric phase.
Abstract:
A process for the preparation of a composition useful in telecommunications jacketing comprising: (i) introducing a polyolefin into the first mixing zone of a melt/mixer having first and second mixing zones; (ii) introducing particulate carbon black per se or a premix of said carbon black and polyolefin into the first mixing zone, said carbon black being in an amount of about 2 to about 50 percent based on the weight of the polyolefin introduced into the first mixing zone; (iii) melting the polyolefin in the presence of the carbon black in the first mixing zone; (iv) mixing the carbon black and the molten polyolefin in the first mixing zone to provide a molten mixture; (v) passing the molten mixture from step (iv) into the second mixing zone; (vi) adding sufficient polyolefin to the molten mixture from step (v) to dilute the carbon black to a level of about 2 to about 3 percent by weight based on the weight of the total polyolefin in the melt/mixer; (vii) mixing the added polyolefin with the molten mixture in the second mixing zone to provide a molten mixture; (viii) about simultaneously with step (vii), venting the second mixing zone; (ix) recovering the mixture from step (vii); and (x) optionally, pelletizing the mixture from step (ix).
Abstract:
A continuous process is disclosed for preparing a reactive particulate dispersion in a liquid carrier. The process comprises mixing together as a melt a resin and a crosslinker under extrusion condition at a temperature and for a time such that substantial crosslinker potential is retained between the resin and the crosslinker and thereafter dispersing the mixture whilst still molten into the liquid carrier and allowing the molten dispersed mixture to solidify to form particles.
Abstract:
Described are methods that utilize high efficiency evaporative distillation to make a high softening point coal tar pitch, a quinoline insoluble-free and ash-free coal tar pitch having a desired softening point, and a mesophase coal tar pitch. Each of the methods uses a feed coal tar pitch having a softening point in the range of 70null C. to 160null C. The methods may be carried out using appropriate conventional distillation equipment, a wiped film evaporator, or a thin film evaporator.

The present invention relates to polymeric resins that have been impregnated with insect repellents and methods for making same. In particular, the insect repellents contain citronella oil and d-limonene. Additionally, the present invention relates to products formed from insect repellent impregnated polymeric resins and methods for making same. Preferred products such as, for example, plastic tablecloths, plastic garbage receptacles and plastic garbage/lawn bags are described.
Abstract:
A continuous process provides a devolatilized liquid injection moldable silicone composition. In the process, a filler, treating agent and silicone polymer are introduced into an extruder having a length to diameter ratio of at least greater than 50. The filler, treating agent and silicone elastomer are continuously compounded in the extruder into a devolatilized liquid injection moldable silicone composition. A system for preparing a liquid silicone rubber composition comprises a mixer to prepare a concentrate of filler and silicone polymer, a long extruder having an L/D ratio of greater than 50, connected to the mixer to receive the concentrate from the mixer and to compound and devolatilize the concentrate, a treating agent and silicone polymer into a liquid silicone rubber composition containing volatiles and a cooler to receive the liquid silicone rubber composition to cool, homogenize and further devolatilized the composition.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a polyamide nanocomposite composition by mixing in the melt phase a polyamide, a solid substance composed of anisotropic particles with a high aspect ratio and a liquid, the liquid being added to and subsequently mixed with a melt comprising at least the polyamide. Preferably water is chosen as the liquid. The invention also relates to a polyamide nanocomposite composition obtained by mixing in the melt phase a polyamide and a non-swollen solid substance composed of particles with a high aspect ratio. The polyamide nanocomposite compositions obtained with the process according to the invention and the polyamide nanocomposite compositions according to the invention can be used in all moulded parts which can be produced with a polyamide composition and which demand particularly good mechanical properties, for example for use in the motor compartment of a vehicle, for casings and for connectors.
Abstract:
The present invention is to a process for producing a matrix particle of a colored lake or dye which matrix reduces the leeching or bleeding of the colored lake or dye into the surrounding medium. The present inventive process is particularly useful in toothpaste formulations.
Abstract:
Curable epoxy resin compositions, preferably solvent-free, wherein a fluorene amine curative is partially melt dissolved and partially dispersed as a solid in at least one aromatic polyepoxide. The compositions provide prepregs which exhibit tack with surprisingly good shelf life properties. Cured composites comprising the prepregs are also provided. The cured composites exhibit little resin migration and glass transition temperatures that are comparable to those of cured neat resins.
