Resin blends with a wide variety of desirable tensile properties are prepared from a polyphenylene ether having a low proportion of unneutralized amino nitrogen; an elastomeric polyester or blend thereof with a poly(ethylene terephthalate) or poly(butylene terephthalate); and at least one polymer containing a substantial proportion of aromatic polycarbonate units as a compatibilizing agent. The blends are free from extraneous impact modifiers.
Abstract:
Very high levels of insulation resistance and of insulation resistance stability of insulating compositions having polyolefin bases and having polar organic additives are achieved in this invention. The polar organic additives can be organic halogenated flame retardants, such as decabromodiphenyl oxide. The surprising increase in insulation resistance and in insulation resistance stability is achieved by addition of certain antioxidants in combination and, particularly, the addition of a zinc salt of mercaptoimidazole and a sterically hindered ditertiary butyl phenol. The composition may be crosslinked by radiation or even by chemical means as through use or organic peroxides without loss of the surprisingly increased insulation resistance and insulation resistance stability.

The disclosure relates to difficulty flammable wooden articles, especially chip boards comprising solid and pipe boards, prepared by extrusion from wooden chips and/or woody fibrous materials. The articles contain as a flame-retarding addend a product of(a) 50 to 99.5 weight % of a flame-retarding agent physically and chemically stable under extrusion conditions, preferably 75 to 99.5 weight % of a pulverulent, free-flowing ammonium polyphosphate of the general formulaH.sub.(n-m)+2 (NH.sub.4).sub.m P.sub.n O.sub.3n+1in which n stands for a whole number with an average value of about 20 to 800 and the ratio of m/n is about 1, and(b) about 0.5 to 50 weight % of a cured water-insoluble artificial resin encapsulating the individual particles of the flame-retarding agent or ammonium polyphosphate.The disclosure also relates to difficulty flammable boards veneered with wood or a laminate.
Abstract:
Flame retardant alkenyl aromatic compounds which are vinylbenzyl diaryl phosphine oxides and a method for their preparation are described. They may be polymerized into higher molecular weight flame retardant materials which, in turn, may be admixed with polyphenylene ether resins to form thermoplastic flame resistant molding compositions. The present materials are more resistant to losses in the flame retardancy upon thermal processing, e.g., molding, because the active flame retardant agent, phosphorus, is chemically bound to the polymeric matrix.

A flame-retardant composition comprising a polyphenylene ether and a polystyrene resin in a weight ratio of between 4:1 to 1:4 in admixture with an aromatic thermoplastic polyphonate having a number average molecular weight of 4,000 to 80,000, said thermoplastic polyphosphonate being present in an amount of 1 to 20 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the total mixture.

A plywood body is disclosed which comprises at least two plies of wood bonded together with a phenolic resin adhesive having platey talc incorporated therethrough in amounts of about 5 to 200 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of resin. Such plywood bodies (particularly boards) have significantly greater fire resistance than do plywood bodies containing conventional phenolic adhesives.

Aqueous solutions or slurries consisting essentially of water, ammonium hydrogen orthophosphate and urea wherein the amount of urea is from about one-half of the orthophosphate to about equal to the orthophosphate on a molar basis are useful in providing a fire-retardant coating on wood fibers when such fibers and a thermosetting resin are consolidated, under the simultaneous application of heat and pressure, to produce a panel having a density of at least 0.5 grams per cubic centimeter. The useful range of compositions thus contain a P:C atomic ratio of from about 1:1 to about 2:1. Such panels are improved by providing, prior to subjecting the fibers to heat and pressure, intimate contact between the fibers, the orthophosphate and urea composition and providing an amount of composition of at least 10% by weight of the fibers whereby upon the application of heat and pressure a chemical reaction occurs and a wood-based, fire-retardant panel having a Class II flame rating and improved structural properties is produced.
