    Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting an escape sequence to cause a modem to switch from a data transmission mode to a command mode. The escape sequence precedes a command instruction. The escape sequence comprises a first predetermined set of characters and a second predetermined set of characters. The method comprises the steps of temporarily storing in succession in a memory M characters received by the modem from a host computer; detecting whether the memory contains in contiguous manner the first and second sets of characters; leaving the modem in data transmission mode if the memory does not contain the contiguous occurrence of the first and second predetermined sets of characters; if the memory does contain the contiguous occurrence of the first and second predetermined sets of characters, detecting whether an end-of-instruction code is to be found in the N characters following the first and second contiguous predetermined sets of characters; leaving the modem in a transmission mode if the end-of-instruction code is not detected in said N characters; and if the end-of-instruction code is detected in said N characters, authorizing the modem to switch from data transmission mode to command mode.

    Abstract: A local area network is disclosed including apparatus and methods for transferring data between a plurality of data processing resources ("agents") coupled to a cable. In the preferred embodiment, a plurality of agents are coupled to a common cable for data transmission and reception. An agent newly coupled to the cable dynamically assigns itself a unique address on the cable to which other agents may send data. Once an agent has been assigned a final address, it may then transmit to, and receive data from, other agents on the cable. An agent desiring to send data to a receiving agent follows a three step handshake, wherein the sending agent transmits an "RTS" signal and within a predetermined time must receive a "CTS"signal from the receiving agent. The sending agent then transmits a data frame within a predetermined time after the CTS signal is received. The failure to detect a return CTS signal within the predetermined time denotes a collision condition. Re-transmission is attempted using a linear back off method which is adjusted based on previous cable traffic history.

    Abstract: A laptop personal computer (10) having a display screen (3) disposed on a display housing (2) and a main housing (1) which contains most of the electronics of the computer. The main housing (1) and display housing (2) are rotatably coupled by a hinge (7), and the display screen (3) on the display housing (2) displays a movable cursor (50), the position of which is controlled by a cursor positioning device (12), such as a trackball (32). A keyboard (11) for inputting data into the laptop computer (10) is provided on the top of the main housing (1). A palm rest (9) is provided on top of the main housing (1) adjacent to the bottom row of the keyboard (11) and is adequately large to support the user's palms. The trackball (32) is located in a cooperating recess (34) in the palm rest (9) and is positioned below the space bar of the keyboard (11). At least one switch (55, 56) is provided for initiating the signal to carry out a particular function depending upon the position of the movable cursor (50) on the display screen (3) when the switch (55, 56) is activated. Two buttons (31, 33) are provided on the palm rest for activating the switches (55, 56).

    Abstract: A controller for interfacing between a digital computer and a magnetic disc recorder, such as a "floppy" disc, or other recorder or memory is disclosed. The controller, which permits accessing of the disc with minimum control by the computer, is realized with relatively few components and is particularly suited for interfacing between a microcomputer and a "minifloppy". Track selection with a computed velocity profile is employed. Synchronization with a soft sectored disc is achieved without additional hardware.

    Abstract: A communications medium for transmitting data between a plurality of peripheral devices and a host computer. Only one device may talk on the bus at a time and only in response to a command from the host. When a peripheral device needs to be serviced, it sends out a service request signal by holding the bus low after any command signal. The device continues to request service until it receives a talk command from the host computer. When more than one device are the same type (for example, two mice) are coupled to the bus, the host computer assigns new addresses to the devices. Devices detect collisions by sensing a low signal on the bus when they attempt to send a "1".

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for simultaneously rendering multiple scanlines. Using a scanline approach to rendering, multiple scanlines may be rendered simultaneously through the use of parallel rendering means. The rendering of multiple scanlines in parallel is enabled by creating scanline independence. Scanline independence is achieved by interpolation through direct evaluation of object information. During the rendering process each of the rendering means vertically interpolates to identify a span corresponding to the scanline being rendered. A span is identified by it's X, Y coordinates on a scanline. The scanline being rendered provides the Y-coordinate. Vertical interpolation generally involves the step of deriving the X-coordinates for the endpoints of the span and comprises the steps of: identifying active edges of the object, calculating a relative interpolation weight for each active edge and solving a linear interpolation function using the relative interpolation weight and the leftmost X-coordinate of the active edges and the rightmost X-coordinate of the active edges.

    Abstract: A method of removing frame redundancy in a computer system for a sequence of moving images. The method comprises detecting a first scene change in the sequence of moving images and generating a first keyframe containing complete scene information for a first image. The first keyframe is known, in a preferred embodiment, as a "forward-facing" keyframe or intra frame, and it is normally present in CCITT compressed video data. The process then comprises generating at least one intermediate compressed frame, the at least one intermediate compressed frame containing difference information from the first image for at least one image following the first image in time in the sequence of moving images. In a preferred embodiment, this at least one frame is known as an inter frame. Finally, detecting a second scene change in the sequence of moving images and generating a second keyframe containing complete scene information for an image displayed at the time just prior to the second scene change. This is known, in the preferred embodiment, as a "backward-facing" keyframe. The first keyframe and the at least one intermediate compressed frame are linked for forward play, and the second keyframe and the intermediate compressed frames are linked in reverse for reverse play. In a preferred embodiment, the intra frame is used for generation of complete scene information when the images are played in the forward direction. When this sequence is played in reverse, the backward-facing keyframe is used for the generation of complete scene information.

    Abstract: Systems and processes for booting a device can be implemented by detecting a reset signal associated with the device and retrieving a predetermined page of data from a nonvolatile memory location into a register associated with the nonvolatile memory. The nonvolatile memory may be designed and implemented such that each page of data is retrieved from the nonvolatile memory as a unit, and the page of data includes instructions for use in booting the device. A command to read data stored in the register is received, and the command can include an address identifying a location of one or more instructions within the register. In response, the one or more instructions are retrieved from the register for execution by a processor.
