Abstract: Techniques are provided for a physically unclonable function (PUF) device. One example PUF device includes, a readout integrated circuit (ROIC) (such as a ROIC for a focal plane array or other imaging application), a nanomaterial-based PUF layer on the ROIC, and a common electrode on the PUF layer. The nanomaterial is randomly distributed throughout the PUF layer. A method of using a PUF device that includes a nanomaterial-based PUF layer coupled to a ROIC, where the nanomaterial is randomly distributed throughout the PUF layer, includes driving the ROIC at a plurality of locations coupled to a corresponding plurality of locations of the PUF layer, sensing the nanomaterial at the locations of the PUF layer, and generating a unique identification key from the sensed locations of the PUF layer. The method can be used, for example, for secure decryption or for identifying or authenticating the PUF device.

Abstract: A method for mitigating the effect of a localized jamming attack on a secure, tactical wireless network implements a dynamic relay assignment ("DRA") approach, whereby nodes are dynamically assigned to relay communications to "disadvantaged" nodes that are subject to the attack, the relay nodes being selected based on their communication reliability and their proximity to the disadvantaged nodes. In embodiments, the nodes share with each other performance statistics and, in embodiments, measured local noise levels. In various embodiments, each node provides data to a "strategy optimizer" which then dynamically makes relay assignments. In Link- 16 embodiments support for a "DRA" relay mode is added, and the communication protocol is extended to support the required exchange of communication quality and local noise information via PPLI messages.

Abstract: A method for implementing interference mitigation in wireless network such as a Link (16) network does not require interference recognition and does not degrade signal detection even in the absence of interference. An unmitigated correlation score is obtained by correlating received, unmitigated preamble symbols with expected symbols. At least one of the input signals is also correlated after mitigation to obtain a mitigated signal. A mitigated correlation sore is obtained from the mitigated signals, and a mixed correlation score is obtained by combining mitigated and unmitigated signals. A signal is detected if any of the correlation scores exceeds a corresponding threshold. Embodiments use the unmitigated correlation for subsequent message time of arrival determination if the unmitigated correlation score is above its detection threshold. In embodiments, mitigation is applied to only one of the message frequencies. Implementation of the disclosed method does not require excessive additional electronic resources.

Abstract: A radar warning receiver is disclosed. The radar warning receiver includes an antenna, a signal detection unit, a signal identification unit and an alarm. The antenna collects radio frequency (RF) signals. The signal detection unit is configured to generate a group of frequency and amplitude signals based on the collected RF signals. Specifically, the signal detection unit includes a pair of limiting amplifiers for converting the collected RF signals into corresponding pulsed output signals that track the actual frequency oscillations of the collected RF signals, and a pseudo-random noise generator for injecting noise into one of the limiting amplifiers. Based on the frequency and amplitude signals, the signal identification unit determines whether or not any of the collected RF signals includes a threat signal. The alarm is utilized to present a threat signal to a human operator.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for automated determination of a rocket configuration based on acceleration during rocket motor burn-out and temperature. The rocket configuration is associated with a class of warhead affixed to the rocket. A methodology implementing the techniques according to an embodiment includes measuring the acceleration of the rocket over a period of time associated with the flight of the rocket. The method also includes calculating an acceleration difference between the measured acceleration associated with the start of rocket motor burn-out and the measured acceleration associated with the end of rocket motor burn-out. The method further includes measuring an internal temperature of the rocket and selecting a delta acceleration threshold based on the measured temperature. The method further includes comparing the calculated acceleration difference to the selected delta acceleration threshold, to estimate the rocket configuration. The estimated rocket configuration is used by guidance and control circuitry to select autopilot parameters.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for determination of a guided-munition orientation during flight based on lateral acceleration, velocity, and turn rate of the guided-munition. A methodology implementing the techniques, according to an embodiment, includes obtaining a lateral acceleration vector measurement and a velocity of the guided-munition, and calculating a ratio of the two, to generate an estimated lateral turn vector of the guided-munition. The method also includes integrating the estimated lateral turn vector, over a period of time associated with flight of the guided-munition, to generate a first type of predicted attitude change. The method further includes obtaining and integrating a lateral turn rate vector measurement of the guided-munition, over the period of time associated with flight of the guided-munition, to generate a second type of predicted attitude change. The method further includes calculating a gravity direction vector based on a difference between the first and second types of predicted attitude change.

Abstract: A Taint Modeling Function (TMF) finds abstract patterns and uses them to automate the malware detection process. TMF involves the process of statically analyzing a sequence of assembly language instructions and abstracting complex relationships among instruction inputs and outputs into a mathematical function containing a set of algebraic expressions. The set of expressions support fully automating semantic pattern detection in binary code. It deterministically generates outputs given inputs determining code block outputs, for given inputs, without executing the code. It detects code patterns automatically to spot bad coding patterns directly from the binary used to detect bugs statically in the entire application space.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for implementing a portable spectrum analyzer. An example system, according to an embodiment, includes a signal analyzer including an RF receiver to receive RF signals from an antenna, an analog-to-digital converter to generate a sampled signal based on the received RF signals, and a signal analysis co-processor to perform cognitive scanning analysis of the sampled signal. The cognitive scanning analysis includes detection, identification, and characterization of digital/analog signal(s) embedded in the sampled signal. The system may further include a communications interface circuit to provide communication between the signal analyzer and an associated mobile host platform (e.g., smartphone). The communication includes transmitting results of the cognitive scanning analysis to the mobile host and receiving parameters from the mobile host to control the operation of the cognitive scanning analysis. The signal analyzer and mobile host are coupled through a shared enclosure such as a hinged case, sleeve, or wallet.
