Abstract: 9136. Davy Bros., and Holmes, T. E. April 27. Steam hammers.-The rod 30, Fig. 1, of the distributing-valve 13 of a steam hammer is pivoted to a lever 32, which is connected at one end by a link 37 to a hand-lever 25, and at the other end by a link 34 to a sleeve 28 oscillated about a pivot 29 by a rod 27 pivoted to the tup. The lever 25 serves to operate the valve by hand, or to determine the length of a stroke when the hammer is working automatically. The stop-valve 17 is operated by a lever 24. Fig. 5 shows a device by which the pivot pins 29 of the sleeve 28 can be made to coincide with the pivot 35 in order that the motion of the tup may have no influence on the distributing- valve. For this purpose the pivot pins 29 of the sleeve 28 are carried by the jaws 39 of a lever 41, and work in slots 45 in wings 46 on the sleeve 28 on each side of a lug carrying the pivot 35.

Abstract: 23,628. Davy Bros., and Holmes, T. E. Nov. 16. Intensifiers.-A single fluid or hand actuated valve is placed at the connexion between the high and low pressure portions of a hydraulic intensifier system, to perform the double purpose of admitting water to and discharging water from the high-pressure system. In the intensifier system shown in Fig. 1, the intensifier cylinder 4 supplies the press cylinder 2 through the pipe 3, while the steam piston 7 and the retracting-pistons 10 are operated through the valves 14,15, respectively, the latter being worked by the lever 13. A valve 17 is placed at the junction between the highpressure pipe 3 and the low-pressure pipe 19 and this valve admits water automatically from the pipe 19 when the space between the plungers 5 and 1 increases. The valve is provided with a piston 20, which may be operated by auxiliary pressure governed by the valve 23, in order that it may be raised to allow of the discharge of liquid from the high-pressure main.
