Abstract:
A system and method for moving voice telephone calls through a data network. More particularly, the system and method are directed to the efficient operation of using identification numbers to route data packets through a communications node without reformatting individual data packets to the native protocol of that communications node. The exception is when the data packet will be more efficiently handled within the overall communications network by routing different pieces of that data packet to different outgoing port cards in a particular communications node, then the data packet will be reformatted, if necessary, to the native protocol of that communications node. The system and method allow the outgoing port card to convert the data packet into the correct format for transmission to either the destination (customer) or the next communications node. Together port cards and data switches form nodes. The port card receives and transmits out signals through respective ports connected to links between nodes.

A system for generating reports includes a graphical user interface that enables a user to submit requests for pre-defined or customized reports. The user may select the data upon which a report will be based and test the report at various stages to determine whether the report will provide the desired information.

Methods are disclosed for providing prepaid telephony service via an Internet protocol (IP) network system. A first method provides controlling at least one media agent or call routing station/switch of an IP network system for allowing and/or blocking call media streams from traversing through the media agent. A second method provides directing all signaling messages transmitted by a signaling agent or station and all media packets transmitting voice and data communications through at least one common device within the IP network system. The methods further provide for continuously monitoring a subscriber's account balance and terminating the prepaid telephony service if the account balance is less than a predetermined amount.

A data network may include an upstream router having one or more data handling queues, a downstream router, and a policy server. In one embodiment, the policy server includes processing resources, a communication interface in communication with the processing resources, and data storage that stores a configuration manager executable by the processing resources. The configuration manager configures data handling queues of the upstream router to provide a selected bandwidth to one or more of a plurality of service classes of data flows. In addition, the configuration manager transmits to the downstream router one or more virtual pool capacities, each corresponding to a bandwidth at the upstream router for one or more associated service classes among the plurality of service classes. In one embodiment, the configuration manager configures the data handling queues on the upstream router only in response to acknowledgment that one or more virtual pool capacities transmitted to the downstream router were successfully installed.

A method and apparatus performing fault management in an optical communications system including a polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensator. The method and apparatus utilizes a controller receiving notifications indicative of PMD in the system, as well as at least one indicator from a system device providing an indication of an attribute of the communication system. Such system devices include a receiver providing a Q factor and a bit error rate (BER) of an optical signal, and a signal-to-noise ratio meter providing an SNR of the optical signal. The method intelligently provides fault management by correlating the PMD notifications and system indicators to distinguish between fiber failure, PMD-related degradations, and failure of monitoring equipment itself.
Abstract:
A device is disclosed that uses an continuous analytical function representing mapping data relating object voice connection measurements to likely user perception of the quality of a voice connection. The device is compact and inexpensive. It can be implemented on a single integrated circuit, or on a single printed circuit board. CPU processing time is significantly reduced. The device obtains a real-time estimate of likely user perception of a given connection in terms of a user perception rating system. The device is reprogrammable, enabling it to be updated as more accurate mapping data is obtained.

A method for signaling an Integrated Messaging System (IMS) on an Internet Protocol (IP) based network to deposit a message, including the steps of sending a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) SIP INVITE request to the IMS indicating a message deposit action; receiving a corresponding SIP message, from the IMS agreeing to participate in the message deposit action; and sending an SIP acknowledge message to the IMS confirming receipt of the corresponding SIP message; and depositing the message in a destination mailbox. A method of signaling an IMS on an IP based network to retrieve a deposited message, the method including the steps of sending a SIP INVITE request to the IMS indicating a message retrieval action; receiving a corresponding SIP message from the IMS agreeing to participate in the message retrieval action; sending an SIP acknowledge message to the IMS confirming receipt of the corresponding SIP message; and retrieving the deposited message from a mailbox corresponding to known account information.

An approach for processing voice calls over a packet switched network as to efficiently utilize the functionalities of a Voice Response Unit (VRU). According to one embodiment, a call originator, acting as a User Agent Client in accordance with the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), issues messages to establish a first call-leg with the VRU. The VRU performs digit collection to obtain information to authenticate the call originator and to authorize the voice call. Based upon the issued messages from the call originator, the VRU establishes a second call-leg with the call terminator. The VRU is released from the voice call after binding the call-legs to connect the call originator to the call terminator.

The present invention discloses a method whereby the separate protocols: session initiation protocol SIP. resource reservation protocol RSVP. common open policy service COPS. and open settlement protocol OSP are used together to setup. maintain. and teardown Internet communications having an acceptable QoS. This process is accomplished by dynamically establishing RSVP policy based on SIP telephony requests to provide IP communications with QoS across the Internet. The QoS policy is installed in network elements at the request of the network elements. The network elements receive a RSVP PATH or RESV request and queries the policy server; the policy server queries a Local database about ID and services for the user and a clearinghouse server (if available) or a policy server in a corresponding network; upon positive acknowledgement from the local database and/or the clearinghouse server. the policy server confirms policy in network elements to accept RSVP PATH and RESV requests for the particular reserved data flow to the SIP client. In this manner, the called telephone will not ring until policy has been provisioned in the network elements and resources have been reserved end-to-end to ensure an acceptable level of QoS.

A method and system for improving the passage of silent or unused status of DsO channel to a data switch with a DsO switching capacity. The method allows the DsO channel source to be the only equipment that must engage a digital signal processor to remove silent and unused DsO channels from a DsO channel carrying data packet. The method provides for the DsO channel source, the intermediate nodes (data switches with DsO switching matrixes included) and DsO channel destination to recognize a simple and efficient means of passing suppression status of a DsO channel through the entire network.
