Abstract: Disclosed herein are prokaryotic homologs of viperin (pVips), and nucleotide and nucleoside analogs produced from pVips. These nucleotide and nucleoside analogs stop nucleotide chain synthesis and provide host cells with resistance to viral infections by targeting actively replicating viral genome. Further, these nucleotide and nucleoside analogs decrease DNA replication in malignant cells. Further disclosed are methods of identifying pVips, and nucleotide and nucleoside analogs produced thereof.
