    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for producing a syndiotactic styrenic polymer, by which the syndiotactic styrenic polymer that has excellent heat resistance and excellent moldability, is useful as a high performance resin or the like, and has a highly syndiotactic structure and a high mol.wt. can efficiently be obtained, by polymerizing a specific styrenic monomer in the presence of a specific catalyst in a specific solvent at a specified temperature. SOLUTION: This method for producing a syndiotactic styrenic polymer comprises polymerizing one or more kinds of styrenic monomers of the formula [R is H or the like; (m) is 0 to 5] in a solvent comprising a halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon having a dielectric constant of 3.0 to 5.5 at a temperature of -50 to 40 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst component consisting mainly of the reaction product of (A) a transition metal compound of the formula: MR1aR2bR3cX14-(a+b+c) and/or the formula: MR1dR2eX13-(d+e) [R1 to R3 are each H or the like; M is titanium or the like; X1 is a halogen; (a) to (c) are each 0 to 4; (d) and (e) are each 0 to 3] with (B) one or more compounds selected from organic aluminoxy compounds, ionic compounds which can react with the component A to produce cationic transition metal compounds, Lewis acid compounds, and so on.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject polyurethane exhibiting specific thermal and dynamic properties and useful as a functional material for liquid crystals, non- linear optical articles, and the like by including specific head-tail structure units and specified head-head-tail-tail structure units in a specific ratio. SOLUTION: This ordered polyurethane comprises (A) head-tail structure units of formula I [R1 and R2 are each H or a lower alkyl; (n) is 1-10] and (B) head-head-tail-tail structure units of formula II (R3 is a divalent alcohol residue) in a (y)/[(x)+(y)] ratio of 0.7-1. The polyurethane of the component B is obtained by reacting a diisocyanate compound with about 1/2 fold mole of the diol compound at the above-described temperature.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as an intermediate for enabling the synthesis of a polymer in a fewer reaction stages by using a calixresorcinolarene containing a number of hydroxyl groups at a central nucleus. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I [R is a (non)substituted benzyloxy; R is hydrogen or R; R to R are each hydrogen, a halogen or the like with the proviso that at least one of R to R is a (non)substituted benzyloxy]. The compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II (All is allyl; X is hydrogen, an alkyl or the like; (p) is 0-3) with a calix [4] resorcinolarene compound of formula III (Y is X; (q) is 1-3; Z is hydrogen or a hydroxyl group). The compound of formula II is obtained, for example, by starting from 3,5- dihydroxybenzoic acid. The compound of formula III is obtained by reacting resorcinol or pyrogallol with a hydroxyl group-containing aromatic aldehyde. A C-3,5-Dihydroxyphenylcalix[4]resorcinolarene is a new compound.
