Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for producing a syndiotactic styrenic polymer, by which the syndiotactic styrenic polymer that has excellent heat resistance and excellent moldability, is useful as a high performance resin or the like, and has a highly syndiotactic structure and a high mol.wt. can efficiently be obtained, by polymerizing a specific styrenic monomer in the presence of a specific catalyst in a specific solvent at a specified temperature. SOLUTION: This method for producing a syndiotactic styrenic polymer comprises polymerizing one or more kinds of styrenic monomers of the formula [R is H or the like; (m) is 0 to 5] in a solvent comprising a halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon having a dielectric constant of 3.0 to 5.5 at a temperature of -50 to 40 deg.C in the presence of a catalyst component consisting mainly of the reaction product of (A) a transition metal compound of the formula: MR1aR2bR3cX14-(a+b+c) and/or the formula: MR1dR2eX13-(d+e) [R1 to R3 are each H or the like; M is titanium or the like; X1 is a halogen; (a) to (c) are each 0 to 4; (d) and (e) are each 0 to 3] with (B) one or more compounds selected from organic aluminoxy compounds, ionic compounds which can react with the component A to produce cationic transition metal compounds, Lewis acid compounds, and so on.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject styrene-based polymer excellent in heat resistance and moldability and processability and useful as a raw material for various high-performance functional resins by constituting the polymer so as to have a specific molecular weight and increase the modification ratio of molecular terminals. SOLUTION: This polymer is a (co)polymer having a structural unit of formula I [R1 is H, a halogen, a 1-3C hydrocarbon, O, N or the like; (m) is 0-5]. In the polymer, tacticity of C1 carbon of phenyl group containing a substituent group is limited to >=30% based on racemic pentad by 13C-NMR and the number-average molecular weight (Mn) is limited to 1,000 to 10,000,000 and weight-average molecular weight (Mw)/Mn is limited to =30% in total molecular chain. The polymer is preferably obtained by previously bringing a transition metal compound into contact with an organic aluminum oxy compound at -50 deg.C to 50 deg.C for 5 sec to 10 hr and further bringing a compound of formula II into contact with the resultant catalyst at -50 deg.C to 50 deg.C for 30 sec to 36 hr to polymerize the compound of formula II.

The compound is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II (All is allyl; X is hydrogen, an alkyl or the like; (p) is 0-3) with a calix [4] resorcinolarene compound of formula III (Y is X; (q) is 1-3; Z is hydrogen or a hydroxyl group). The compound of formula II is obtained, for example, by starting from 3,5- dihydroxybenzoic acid. The compound of formula III is obtained by reacting resorcinol or pyrogallol with a hydroxyl group-containing aromatic aldehyde. A C-3,5-Dihydroxyphenylcalix[4]resorcinolarene is a new compound.

SOLUTION: This method for producing an olefinic polymer having carbonyl groups at the polymer terminals comprises polymerizing a 2 to 20C olefinic monomer such as propylene in the presence of a catalyst at a polymerization temperature of -20 to -100 deg.C and then reacting the obtained olefinic living polymer with a carbonylating agent. The catalyst comprises (A) a zirconium- containing compound having one or more cyclopentadienyl skeletons (for example, biscyclopentadienylzirconium dimethyl), (B) a borane compound of the formula: B(Ph)3 [Ph is (substituted)phenyl] [for example, tris(pentafluorophenyl) boron] or a borate compound of the formula: B-(Ph)4X+ (X+ is a cation), and (C) a titanium-containing compound.
