Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare the subject cotton-like fiber having a high strength and useful for composite materials in electronic industry, automobile industry, etc., without requiring a cutting process, by feeding a pitch into a spinning device, extruding the melted pitch while blowing out the melted pitch from the periphery of an extrusion hole and subsequently subjecting the spun fiber to a non- melting treatment and subsequently to a calcination. CONSTITUTION:An optically isotropic pitch and/or an optically anisotropic pitch is fed into a spinning device and the melted pitch is spun while being blown out from the periphery of an extrusion hole. The fiber spun thus is subjected to a non-melting treatment and to a calcination treatment to prepare the objective short fibers.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain in high efficiency the title lightweight composite outstanding in strength and heat resistance, by coating carbon fiber heat-treated at relatively low temperatures with a tar oil such as anthracene oil, carrying out treatment under press heating followed by impregnation with a thermosetting resin or pitch and then sintering. CONSTITUTION:First, a carbon fiber is produced by infusibilization treatment in air at 280 to 350 deg.C of a fibrous pitch formed by spinning e.g., mesophase pitch or optically isotropic pitch, followed by heat treatment at relatively low temperatures of 500 to 800 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere. Secondly, this carbon fiber is coated with at least one king of tar oil selected from anthracene oil, coal tar and coal tar pitch. Thirdly, the resultant coated carbon fiber is put into a mold of desired shape, and subjected to press heating treatment at 600 to 800 deg.C pref. in an inert atmosphere under a load of 0.1 to 10kg/cm -G. Finally, the resulting form is impregnated with a thermosetting resin or pitch under pressure to fill the pores therewith followed by sintering while, if needed, preventing the pitch from distilling out, thus obtaining the objective carbonaceous composite.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compact having ion-exchange function and moldability in arbitrary shape by performing crosslinking processing on amphipatic carbonaceous mesoface which is soluble in water and organic solvents and manufacturing carbonaceous mesoface compact. CONSTITUTION:Amphipatic carbonaceous mesoface is cross-linked. This crosslinking processing can be performed chemically with the addition of a crosslinking agent or physically by applying radiation. This process is carried out in an atmosphere and at temperatures (normally below 400 deg.C, preferably below 200 deg.C) which do not cause deterioration of the carbonaceous mesoface. When the crosslinking processing is chemically performed, any proper technique can be selected depending upon the kind of a hydrophilic group possessed in the amphipatic carbonaceous mesoface, and use of compacts obtained, etc. However, when the hydrophilic group has activated hydrogen such as a hydroxyl group or carboxyl group crosslinking processing is generally performed with an ion mechanism of condensation reaction or addition reaction-type.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled yarn having high modulus of elasticity, by hydrogenating coal tar (pitch), heating the coal tar at a specific temperature under reflux, then heat-treating the heated pitch at temperature lower than the temperature and further carrying out melt spinning. CONSTITUTION:Coal tar (pitch) is hydrogenated at 400-500 deg.C and an insoluble solid content is removed by vacuum filtration, etc. Then, the hydrogenated pitch is heated to 450-500 deg.C at >=30 deg.C/min rate of heating under reflux and further the heated pitch is heat-treated at 400-450 deg.C under reduced pressure or by introducing an inert gas such as nitrogen gas, etc. Then, the prepared pitch is subjected to melt spinning, to infusible treatment in the presence of oxygen at 280-400 deg.C, further carbonized in an inert gas at 1,000-1,500 deg.C and, if necessary, graphitized at >=2,000 deg.C to give the aimed yarn.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a hollow carbonaceous spherical body of light weight excel lent in heat resistance and chemical resistance by allowing a pitch powder having specified softening point and size to adsorb a specified amt. of iodine in an iodine vapor and then treating the powder by heating at specified temp. CONSTITUTION:A pitch powder having 150-300 deg.C softening point and 005-1mm particle diameter is prepared. Then the powder is treated to adsorb 80-250wt.% iodine as the weight increase in an iodine vapor at 80-130 deg.C, and then treated by heating at >=400 deg.C. By this method, first, the surface of pitch particles is hardened, and then the inner pitch which is not hardened is melted by heating. Then the powder is foamed by the gas component produced in the pitch to obtain a hollow carbonaceous spherical powder. The obtd. hollow carbonaceous spherical powder can be used as a light-weight filler or activated to be used as a hollow activated carbon.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the light carbonaceous solid electrolytic material having excellent formability by composing the carbonaceous material of sulfonated carbonaceous material obtained by a treatment with the sulfonating agent. CONSTITUTION:Carbonaceous material is composed of the sulfonated carbonaceous material obtained by a treatment with the sulfonating agent. Carbonaceous mesoface and (or) raw coke manufactured by a thermal treatment of pitch class, which is one of the heavy bituminous material, are desirably used as the raw material of the solid electrolyte. Concretely, carbonaceous material as raw material is treated with the sulfonating agent such as sulfuric acid and/or fuming sulfuric acid, and the treated material is distributed in the water to be washed once with water or filtrated with a filter as it is to eliminate the residual sulfuric acid or fuming sulfuric acid, and sulfone group is led into carbonaceous mesoface. Light carbonaceous solid electrolytic material is obtained which is stabilized in the air and has excellent formability for manufacturing through a relatively simple process.
