Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide an apparatus and method controlling the flow of aspiration fluid in an aspiration chamber of a surgical cassette. One embodiment of the present invention provides an aspiration chamber having an aspiration port positioned at or close to the bottom of the chamber. When the aspiration fluid enters the aspiration chamber from below the fluid surface (e.g., from a port located at the bottom or on a sidewall close to the bottom), it does not create disturbance at the liquid/air interface and thus does not disturb the continuous level sensing. Also, since the aspiration port is placed at or very close to the bottom of the aspiration chamber, the liquid inside the chamber can be fully used for sustained reflux and push priming.

Abstract: An irrigation/aspiration system (10), comprises an irrigation line (31), wherein the irrigation line is configured to be connected to a source of irrigation fluid (29); an aspiration line (30); a collection chamber (18); a vacuum pump (12), wherein the vacuum pump is configured to introduce a vacuum into the collection chamber (18) to draw an irrigation fluid from the source of irrigation fluid (29) through the irrigation line (31), a surgical site, and the aspiration line (30) and into the collection chamber; control circuitry (24); an irrigation sensor (26), wherein the control circuitry (24) is configured to monitor irrigation fluid flow or irrigation fluid pressure in the irrigation line through use of the irrigation sensor; a flow pump (14), wherein the control circuitry (24) is configured to use the flow pump (14) and/or vacuum pump (12) to adjust a level of fluid in the collection chamber (18);a fluid level sensor (20), wherein the control circuitry (24) is configured to monitor a fluid level in the collection chamber (18) using the fluid level sensor; a pressure transducer (16), wherein the control circuitry (24) is configured to use the pressure transducer to monitor a vacuum in the collection chamber (18) from the vacuum pump (12). The control circuitry (24) is configured to vary the vacuum introduced into the collection chamber (18) based on the monitored irrigation fluid flow or irrigation fluid pressure and the monitored fluid level in the collection chamber so as to maintain fluid flow into the collection chamber through the aspiration line (30) at a selected flow rate.

Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for detecting the level or presence of a fluid in a surgical cassette (150,500) by projecting light from a linear light source into a wall of a cassette. Depending on the amount a light reflected (220',330,360) or refracted (220,330',360') in the cassette (i.e., due to the cassette material/fluid interface or cassette material/air interface (or other interface)) various portions of a linear sensor array (206,508,314,352) will be more or less illuminated. By examining the illumination of the linear sensor array, the level of fluid in the chamber can be determined.
