Abstract: Chlorotrifluoroethylene is made by heating CCl2FCClF2 with hydrogen at 325-425 DEG C. in the presence of a copper oxide of chromiumalkaline earth metal oxide catalyst, the catalyst having been made by calcining a precipitate obtained by reacting in solution an ammonium chromate with a copper salt and with an alkaline earth metal salt. Barium-containing catalysts are preferred. The reaction is effected in the gas phase, the hydrogen and CCl2F.CClF2 being mixed in any proportion. The product may contain some trifluoroethylene which is separated by fractional distillation. Examples are provided.

Abstract: The invention comprises compounds of the general formula wherein M represents an alkali metal, X represents chlorine or bromine, and n and m, which may be the same or different, are 0, 1, 2 or 3, with the proviso that n + m is at least 1. The compounds are prepared by reacting an alkali metal cyanide with a compound of the formula under substantially anhydrous conditions in the presence of tetrahydrofuran. The compound may be converted to amides of the formula by heating with conc. H2SO4, which amides may be converted either in situ or in a separate step to the corresponding acids of the general formula Examples are given.

Abstract: The invention comprises the trihydrate of hexafluoroacetone, the trihydrate of pentafluorochloroacetone and the monohydrate of pentafluorochloroacetone. The trihydrates are prepared by reacting the ketone or its monohydrate with sufficient liquid water to form the trihydrate, at a temperature from 5 DEG to 80 DEG C. The trihydrates may also be prepared by heating the monohydrate to at least 40 DEG C. or by heating a mixture containing the ketone or its monohydrate, and water to volatilize materials which boil below 105 DEG C. The pentafluorochloroacetone monohydrate is prepared by reacting the ketone with sufficient water or sufficient of its trihydrate to form the monohydrate. The product hydrates are dehydrated on contact with a dessicant, e.g. concentrated sulphuric acid or phosphorus pentoxide, to liberate the free ketone.
