Abstract:
Trichlorofluoromethane refrigeration systems use mineral oil to lubricate the compressor. We have found that the use of 1,1-dichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane and mineral oil results in the formation of 1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane; in the absence of mineral oil, the use of 1,1-dichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane does not result in the formation of 1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane. We have found an additive which substantially reduces the formation of 1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane. Thus, the present invention provides a composition comprising: (a) 1,1-dichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane; (b) hydrogen-contributing lubricant; and (c) a composition comprising: (i) at least one phenol and (ii) at least one aromatic or fluorinated alkyl epoxide wherein the composition (c) substantially reduces the decomposition of 1,1-dichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane.
Abstract:
A method of cleaning a surface of a substrate is provided. The solvent is selected from a group consisting of hydrochlorofluorocarbons having 3 to 5 carbon atoms and a maximum of two chlorine atoms. The environmental lifetime of the solvent is expected to be less than one year.
Abstract:
The invention is a butterfly-type check valve (8) wherein the valve plate (18) moves translationally relative to a pivot axis (90) and incident to its own rotational movement. The invention employs biasing means (102, 104, 108) for initiating movement of the valve plate when the latter is at a closed rotational position, thereby eliminating the need for a pilot valve.
Abstract:
The invention provides novel blends and processes for producing such blends which include a polyamide, an olefinic acid copolymer or salt thereof, and a maleated ethylene/propylene rubber, wherein such novel blends may be processed by conventional extrusion and molding techniques, do not require a separate curing step or procedure in the overall production process, and which produces articles which have some physical characteristics similar to those exhibited by thermoplastic elastomers. The inventive compositions exhibit feature excellent resistance to zinc chloride solutions and are formable in a single melt blending step.
Abstract:
A bolt (10) for attaching a first member (12) to a second (14) with a desired compressive force. The bolt has a cylindrical body (16) with a threaded section (22) on a first end (20) and a head (18) on a second end (24). The cylindrical body has a longitudinal bore (32) which extends to a cross bore (34) in the head. A pin (36) located in the cross bore has a first flat surface (38) separated from a second flat surface (40) by a shoulder (42). A rod (44) located in the longitudinal bore has a first end (46) fixed to the cylindrical body (16) and a second end (52) that is located on the first flat surface (38). A spring acts (54) on the pin (36) to hold the shoulder (42) against the rod (44). An input torque applied to the head (18) causes the threads (22) to move into threads (30) on the second body (14). When the head (18) engages the first body (12), further torque results in expansion or elongation of the cylindrical body (16). The rod (44) freely moves in the longitudinal bore (32) and when a predetermined elongation occurs corresponding to the depth of the shoulder on the pin, the spring (54) moves the pin (36) to align the second flat surface (40) over the rod. With the second flat surface (40) in alignment with the rod (44), a portion of the pin extends past the head (18) to provide a visual indication that a desired compressive force has been developed between the first (12) and second members (14).
Abstract:
A seal arrangement for a metering valve wherein a cylindrical member (30) has a groove (38) located on a face adjacent a seat which surrounds an opening connected to an inlet port (20). An elastomeric member has a base which is located in the groove (38) with a projection that extends past the face on the cylindrical member. A ring is resiliently held against the elastomeric member by a sleeve (60) to form a first static seal between the cylindrical member, retaining ring and a sleeve. A piston (72) located in the sleeve has a flange (90) with first and second ribs thereon separated by a recess (94). An input member positions the piston (77) such that the first rib engages the projection and compresses the elastomeric member before the second rib engages the seat to form a static seal between the piston and cylindrical member to assure that fluid flow between an inlet port and an exit port (22) terminates when the piston is in a closure position. The recess on the piston provides a space for the elastomeric material to flow without damage to the projection when the first rib engages the ring and the second rib engages the seat.
Abstract:
A high temperature thermocouple sensing apparatus (48) is readily removable from a gas turbine engine (10). The thermocouple extends through aligned openings (31, 34) in inner and outer housings (16, 12) and seals both openings through use of a pair of spherical sealing elements (62, 64) and a spring seal bellows (82) urging a seat (92) into sealing engagement with one sealing element (64) and urging the other sealing element (62) into engagement with the inner housing.
Abstract:
The ionomer salt of low molecular weight copolymer reaction product of a copolymer acid of an alpha -olefin and an unsaturated carboxylic acid, and at least one amino acid compound, and a cation containing material. The unsaturated carboxylic acid is preferably an alpha , beta -ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid. The present invention includes a method of preparing the ionomer. The ionomer has excellent compatibility with other polymers, particularly polyamides. The ionomer is useful in a method to flush water from pigments.
Abstract:
An airborne wind shear detection radar includes a transmitter for transmitting successive radar beams into airspace in front of an aircraft and a receiver for receiving reflected signals. The radar analyzes the received reflected signals in the frequency domain to determine if a wind shear condition exists in the airspace in front of the aircraft.
