Abstract: 1,207,083. Laser glass compositions. AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP. 28 Jan., 1969 [30 April, 1968], No. 4668/69. Heading C1M. [Also in Divisions C4 and H1] A laser comprises a glass laser rod 12 containing trivalent erbium as an active laser ion and producing a 1À5 micron output, the rod having a cladding 14 containing trivalent praseodymium which is transparent to the optical pumping energy but absorbs off-axis spontaneous emission of the output wavelength. The glass rod may additionally include neodymium and/or ytterbium ions as pump ions. A suitable laser glass composition consists, by weight, of 15% ytterbium oxide, 0.25% erbium oxide, 70.64% silicon oxide, 7.58% sodium oxide, 11À47% potassium oxide, 5À05% barium oxide, 1À05% antimony, 1.58% aluminium oxide, 1.58% zinc oxide and 1.05% lithium oxide. With this glass composition the pump ion concentration may be 0À1 to 60% by weight and the laser ion=0.001% to 20% by weight. Where neodymium oxide is used in addition its amount should preferably match the erbium concentration. The praseodymiumcontaining cladding may be a clear glass or a plastics material. The glass composition used as a host material may be the same as that used for the laser rod, or alternatively an epoxy resin or a chelate material may contain the trivalent praseodymium. A specific example of a cladding glass consists, by weight, of 12.39% zinc oxide, 7.13% aluminium oxide, 8À5% lanthanum oxide, 67.98% phosphoric oxide and 4.0% praseodymium oxide. A liquid cladding may alternatively be used such as an aqueous solution of 0.1 to 30% by weight of praseodymium chloride. In all cases the refractive index of the cladding material should differ by no more than 0.002 from the refractive index of the laser rod. Other inorganic glasses used as host materials for the laser and pump ions are disclosed, including silicates, phosphates, borates, arsenic trisulphides, selenides, tellurides, fluorides, oxifluorides, alumino-silicates, germanates and sulphur containing glasses Reference has been directed by the Comptroller. to Specification 1,138,338.

Abstract: 1,138,338. Laser glass compositions. AMERICAN OPTICAL CO. 29 Nov., 1965 [22 Dec., 1964], No. 50513/65. Heading C1M. [Also in Divisions C4 and H1] A laser includes rare-earth sensitizer ions and laser ions in a glass host material (see Division H1). In one embodiment trivalent erbium is used as a laser ion and trivalent ytterbium as a sensitizer in a glass host material comprising 15% ytterbium oxide, % erbium oxide, 70À64% silicon oxide, 7À58% sodium oxide, 11À47% potassium oxide, 5À05% barium oxide, 1À05% antimony oxide, 1À58% aluminium oxide, 1À58% zinc oxide and 1À05% lithium oxide. The percentages given are weight per cents. Other glass hosts in which the ytterbium and erbium are used may be silicates, phosphates, borates, borosilicates, arsenic trisulphide, selenides, tellurides and other chalcogenics, fluorides, oxi-fluorides, aluminosilicates and germanates. Neodymium may also be used as a pump ion in addition to the ytterbium, and trivalent thulium or holmium may be used as laser ions, in which case ytterbium and erbium, and ytterbium, erbium and thulium are used as pump ions respectively. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,015,057.

Abstract: 1,133,347. Making holograms. AMERICAN OPTICAL CO. Nov.24, 1965 [Dec.14, 1964], No.49874/65. Heading G2C. An apparatus for producing a hologram of an object 56 by the two beam process in which the reference beam 52 is emitted from a point source 54 closely adjacent the object, but so positioned that the reference beam is not diffracted by the object, the spherical wave front of the reference beam being substantially parallel to the spherical wave front of the object beam. In another embodiment, Fig. 9 (not shown), the point source is spaced from the object so that the reference beam impinges on the film at an angle to the object beam.
