Abstract: Azulene-squaric acid dyes of the formula in which R is optionally substituted C1-C12-alkyl, carboxyl, C1-C12-alkoxycarbonyl, carbamoyl or C1-C4-mono- or dialkylcarbamoyl, and R , R , R and R independently of one another are hydrogen or optionally substituted C1-C12-alkyl, with the proviso that, if R is hydrogen, the ring positions of the substituents CH2-R and R on one or both azulene rings may be changed over within an azulene ring, and an optical recording medium containing the novel dyes.
