Abstract: Acids of formula (I) (where X and Y are halogen and one of X and Y can also be H) are produced in good yields and in pure form by oxidizing halo-indanes of formula (II) (where R1 and R3 are H or alkyl and R2 is alkyl) with HNO3 at 50-250 degrees C. (I) (of which those compounds in which both X and Y are halogen and Y is ortho or meta to the carbonyl group are new and claimed compounds) are useful as intermediates, esp. for anthraquinones useful e.g. as dyestuffs, as well as for subst. benzanthrones. Peroxides of (I) are useful as initiators for polymerization processes.
