Abstract: The present invention relates to a method to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submergible surface. The method contacts the submergible surface with an effective amount of at least one amide to inhibit bacterial adhesion to the submergible surface. The present invention also relates to a method for controlling biofouling of an aqueous system. This method adds an effective amount of at least one amide to inhibit bacteria from adhering to a submerged surface within the aqueous system. This method effectively controls biofouling without substantially killing the bacteria. The amide used in the method of the invention has the following formula: The present invention also relates to compositions containing amides and useable in the above methods. The compositions comprise at least one amide in an amount effective to inhibit bacteria from adhering to submergible or submerged surfaces.

Abstract: Microbicidal compositions are described. The compositions comprise (a) 2-(Thiocyanomethylthio)benzothiazole (TCMTB) and (b) an N-alkyl heterocyclic compound of the formula: The variable "n" ranges from 5 to 17, and the heterocyclic ring defined by is a substituted or unsubstituted ring having four to eight members. Components (a) and (b) are present in a combined amount effective to control the growth of at least one microorganism. Methods for controlling the growth of microorganisms on various substrates or in aqueous systems are also described. Also described is the industrial application of the microbicidal composition in the leather industry, the lumber industry, the papermaking industry, the textile industry, the agricultural industry, and the coating industry, as well as in aqueous systems.

Se describen composiciones microbicidas en donde el microbicida y el compuesto N-alquilo heterocíclico están presentes en una cantidad combinada efectiva para controlar el crecimiento de al menos un microorganismo. Se describen también métodos para controlar el crecimiento de microorganismos sobre varios substratos y en varios sistemas acuosos. La combinacion del microbicida y el compuesto N-alquilo heterocíclico es particularmente util como microbicida en la industria de la piel, la industria de la madera, la industria de fabricacion de papel, la industria textil, la industria agrícola, y la industria de los recubrimientos, así como también en aguas de procesos industriales.

The fluorosurfactant used in the method of the invention is an anionic or nonionic fluorosurfactant selected from: RfCH2CH2SCH2CH2CO2Li, (RfCH2CH2O)P(O) (ONH4)2, (RfCH2CH2O)2P(O) (ONH4), (RfCH2CH2O)P(O) (OH)2, (RfCH2CH2O)2P(O) (OH), RfCH2CH2O (CH2CH2O)xH, RfCH2CH2O(CH2CH2O)yH, RfCH2CH2SO3H, or mixtures thereof. The group Rf is F(CF2CF2)3-8, x varies from 2-20, and y varies from 2-20. The present invention also relates to a compositions containing a fluorosurfactant and useable in the above methods. The compositions comprise at least one fluorosurfactant in an amount effective to inhibit bacteria from adhering to submergible or submerged surfaces.

Abstract: Methods to control organic contaminants in fibers are described. One method involves contacting the fibers with a composition containing at least one esterase or lipase or both for a sufficient time and in a sufficient amount to control the organic contaminants present in the fibers.
