Abstract: A composition for treatment and after treatment of surfaces, especially metals, with derivatives of polyphenol compounds is provided. The derivatives include substituted aminomethyl groups on at least some of the phenyl rings in the polyphenol polymers, with molecular weights within the range of about 700 to about 70,000 being preferred. The compositions are particularly useful for treating chromated aluminum surfaces prior to painting, to improve corrosion resistance, and when combined with surfactants, for treating plastic and painted surfaces to improve rinsability without water breaks.

Abstract: An aqueous liquid composition auxiliary for deburring/degreasing/cleaning metal parts by mass finishing has as its active ingredients: (A) at least one of (A.1) nonionic surfactant molecules that contain a moiety with the chemical formula -(CmH(2m-z)XzO)v, wherein m has the value 2, 3, or 4; z represents an integer with a value from 0 to 2m; X represents a halogen atom, and if z has a value of more than 1, may represent the same or a different halogen atom for each X; and v represents a positive integer and (A.2) anionic and amphoteric alkali stable surfactants; and (B) molecules, exclusive of molecules that are part of component (A), that include a moiety corresponding to general chemical formula (I), where R represents a monovalent aliphatic moiety with the chemical formula -CnH(2n+1-y)Fy, wherein n is an integer from 6 to 22, and y is an integer from 0 to (2n+1).

Abstract: A metal treatment solution comprising an effective amount of a soluble or dispersible compound which is a derivative of a polyphenol. The present invention comprises novel derivatives of polyphenol compounds useful in the treatment of the surface of metal articles. The present invention also encompasses novel surface treatment solutions or dispersions, and methods of using these solutions or dispersions. The compositions of the present invention include amine oxide containing polyphenol compounds and derivatives thereof. The molecular weight of the polyphenols used in derivatives of the present invention have molecular weights of from about 360 to about 30,000 or greater. The resulting derivatives of the present invention typically have a molecular weight of up to about 2,000,000 with molecular weights within the range of about 700 to about 70,000 being preferred.
