    Abstract: A numerical control system and method for controlling a travelling-wire EDM system in which the pulses from the numerical controller are transmitted to pulse motors driving the workpiece table along X and Y axes for generating the shape to be machined in the workpiece. A taper is applied to the cut by mounting one of the electrode wire guides on a support capable of x and y movements through respective pulse distributors and sign-changing inverters from the numerical controller with respective pulse motors so that the cut on one side of the workpiece represents the sum of increments from both the X-Y and x-y placements while the cut on the opposite side represents substantially only the increments of the X-Y displacements.

    Abstract: An EDM system in which a tool electrode is spacedly juxtaposed with a workpiece to define a machining gap which is substantially open directly to a region of atmospheric air. A non-inflammable (e.g. water-based) machining liquid is injected into the machining gap while electrical discharges are effected therein to electroerosively remove stock from the workpiece and to permit the injected liquid to be at least partially decomposed with a resultant formation of machining products which, growing in amount, are accumulated in a pile as debris on a surface of the workpiece adjacent the machining gap. A brush is provided to sweep the debris, and to substantially remove the piled machining products adjacent the machining gap.

    Abstract: An NC-EDM machine is safeguarded against feed errors arising from both mechanical and erosive-machining effects. The disclosed safety arrangement includes two detecting circuit units. The first unit is arranged to respond to NC-furnished driving command signals for producing a first detection signal representative of a commanded relative displacement to be effected between the tool electrode and the workpiece along a programmed machining path in a given time period. The second detecting unit is arranged to respond to effective electrical discharges caused in the EDM gap to produce a second detection signal representative of an actual relative displacement effected between the tool electrode and the workpiece along the path in the given time period. A comparator is connected to the two detecting units for comparing the first and second detection signals to produce an output signal indicative of a deviation of the actual advancement from the commanded advance.

    Abstract: A wire state of use indication apparatus for use with a traveling-wire electroerosion cutting machine is disclosed in which a sensing unit instantaneously responds to the rotation of a roller disposed in the wire travel path and rotated with the electrode wire travelling in bearing contact with the roller. The number of the rotations is counted to produce a sensing signal which represents the cumulative number of rotations of the roller a number which in turn represents the amount of the electrode wire which has been drawn out of the wire storage rool by a given time instant during a given cutting operation. A processing circuit is provided to process the sensing signal with an input setting signal representing the amount of the electrode wire stored in the reel prior to the commencement of the cutting operation to produce an output signal which represents the amount of the electrode wire remaining in the reel at that time instant. The sensing unit may also provide a further sensing signal representing the instantaneous rate of rotation of the roller which rate in turn represents the instantaneous rate of drawing the wire out of the reel.

    Abstract: Wire-cut electroerosion method and apparatus whereby breakage of an electrode wire is substantially prevented by limiting air-bubbling in the cutting zone from the electrode wire traveling through a liquid-machining medium. The air-bubbling is limited by cleaning the electrode wire advancing from its storage reel prior to its entry into the cutting zone supplied with the liquid machining medium. The electrode wire may be cleaned by brushing the wire between the storage reel and the wire-braking roller and thereafter cleansed by a showering fluid. Preferably, ultrasonic vibrations are applied to the showering fluid. The braking rollers and a wire-conducting roller are also provided with brushes to prevent contaminants from being introduced onto the cleaned electrode wire by these rollers.

    Abstract: To increase machining efficiency a plurality of vibration horn assemblies (8) engage a tool assembly (4a, 5, E1, E2), at preselected different positions on the surface thereof. The electromechanical transducers (81) in the horn assemblies are individually energized to provide a burst of mechanical vibrations from the vibration output face (8a) of the horn member (82) in each vibrator assembly in contact with the tool assembly and to allow the burst to be transmitted to the machining surface of the machining electrode (E1, E2) to vibrationally activate a selected area thereof. The plurality of the vibrational bursts produced at the different locations on the tool assembly are combined, by being applied sequentially or simultaneously, to allow the machining surface of the electrode to be vibrationally activated uniformly over the entire area thereof. The arrangement is advantageously applicable to a variety of electrodes which may be large and to machining a deep and narrow, and/or intricate cavity in the workpiece.

    Abstract: The invention relates to an improved electrical discharge machining method including the apparatus, as a result of which the efficiency of the machining can be considerably increased. Within the scope of the invention, this can be achieved by the provision of a multiplicity of ultrasonic funnel arrangements (8) which act at preset positions on the surface of the tool arrangement (4, 5, E). The electromechanical transducers (81) of the various ultrasonic funnel arrangements (8) are here individually excited, as a result of which mechanical vibration shocks are emitted from the emission surfaces (8a) of the corresponding amplifier horns (82) to the tool arrangement (4, 5, E). These mechanical vibration shocks are fed in this way to the machining surface of the machining electrode (E), as a result of which preselected areas are set in vibration. The multiplicity of vibration shocks produced at various points of the tool arrangement (4, 5, E) are combined sequentially or simultaneously so that the machining surface of the electrode (E) is uniformly set in vibration over the entire surface. The arrangement can preferably be used with a multiplicity of electrodes (E) which can be of relatively large design. Furthermore, deep, narrow and/or complicated hollow spaces (C) can be produced in this way inside workpieces (W).
