Abstract: A composition suitable for treating keratinous fibre fabrics comprises a solution of a polysulph-hydryl polymer which is a polymer in which the backbone consists of saturated carbon atoms or saturated carbon atoms and oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur atoms which contains one or, at more or less regular intervals, more -SH radicals either joined directly to the polymer chain or via intermediate groupings, e.g. amide and ester groupings. The solution may contain 1-20% by weight of the polysulph-hydryl polymer and may be adjusted to a pH of 3.5-10 by, for example, the addition of ammonia or monoethanolamine. Specified polymers are those obtained by the reaction of b -mercapto ethylamine with a styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer or maleic anhydride/ethylene copolymer, by the reaction of N-(b -aminoethyl)thioglycolamide with an ethylene/maleic anhydride copolymer, by the reaction of b -mercaptoethylamine and N,N-diethylpropylene diamine with an ethylene/maleic anhydride copolymer, by the reaction of b -mercaptoethylamine and n-butylamine with a vinyl acetate/maleic anhydride copolymer, by the reaction of b -mercaptoethylamine or N(b -aminoethyl)-thioglycolamide with a vinyl acetate/maleic anhydride copolymer or by the reaction of b -mercaptoethylamine alone or in admixture with butylamine with poly-(maleic anhydride). The composition may be in the form of an aerosol composition the propellant being dichlorodifluoromethane, trichloromonofluoromethane or butane, and optionally containing an anti-foam silicone, a fatty alcohol polyethyoxyether or alkyl phenol polyethoxyether, or may be applied by means of a rotating ball liquid dispenser bottle.ALSO:An aerosol composition suitable for treating keratinous fibre fabrics comprises a solution of a polysulph-hydryl polymer which is a polymer in which the backbone consists of saturated carbon atoms or saturated carbon atoms and oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur atoms which contains one or, at more or less regular intervals, more -SH radicals either joined directly to the polymer chain or via intermediate groupings, e.g. amide and ester groupings. The solution may contain 1-20% by weight of the polysulph-hydryl polymer and may be adjusted to a pH of 3.5-10 by, for example, the addition of ammonia or monoethanolamine. The propellent may be dichlorodifluoromethane, trichloromonofluoro-methane or butane and the composition may optionally contain an anti-foam silicone, a fatty alcohol polyethoxyether or alkyl phenolpolyethoxyether, specified polymers are those obtained by the reaction of b -mercapto ethylamine with a styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer or maleic anhydride/ethylene copolymer, by the reaction of N-(b -aminoethyl) thioglycolamide with an ethylene/maleic anhydride copolymer, by the reaction of b -mercaptoethylamine and N,N-diethylpropylene diamine with an ethylene/maleic anhydride copolymer, by the reaction of b -mercaptoethylamine and n-butylamine with a vinyl acetate/maleic anhydride copolymer, by the reaction of b -mercaptoethylamine or N-(b -aminoethyl)-thioglycolamide with a vinyl acetate/maleic anhydride copolymer or by the reaction of b -mercaptoethylamine alone or in admixture with butylamine with poly (maleic anhydride).ALSO:Durable creases are imparted to fabrics comprising keratinic fibres, e.g. wool, alpaca, camel hair or mohair, by treating them with a solution of a polysulph-hydryl polymer at the location where it is desired to form the crease and forming the crease by applying heat and pressure, e.g. by means of a hot iron or clothes press, to the impregnated fabric while it is arranged in the form of a crease. The polysulph-hydryl polymer is a polymer in which the backbone consists of saturated carbon atoms or saturated carbon atoms and oxygen, nitrogen or sulphur atoms which contains one or, at more or less regular intervals, more -SH radicals either joined directly to the polymer chain or via intermediate groupings, e.g. amide and ester groupings. An aqueous solution containing 1-20% by weight of the polysulph - hydryl polymer and having a pH of 3.5-10 adjusted by, for example, the addition of ammonia or monoethanol amine may be used. Polysulph-hydryl polymers obtained by the reaction of b -mercapto ethylamine with a styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer or maleic anhydride/ethylene copolymer, by the reaction of N-(b -aminoethyl) thioglycolamide with an ethylene/maleic anyhydride copolymer by the reaction of b -mercapto ethylamine and N,N-diethylpropylene diamine with an ethylene/maleic anhydride copolymer, by the reaction of b -mercapto ethylamine and n-butylamine with a vinyl acetate/maleic anhydride copolymer by the reaction of b -mercaptoethylamine or N-(b -aminoethyl)-thioglycolamide with a vinyl acetate/maleic anhydride copolymer or by the reaction of b -mercaptoethylamine alone or in admixture with butylamine with poly(maleic anhydride) are examples of numerous suitable polymers indicated. The treating composition may be used in the form of an aerosol composition, the propellent being dichlorodifluoromethane, trichloromonofluoromethane or butane, and optionally containing an anti-foam silicone, a fatty alcohol polyethoxyether or alkylphenol polyethoxyether, or may be applied by means of a rotating ball liquid dispenser bottle. The fabric may be a woven or knitted fabric, lace or felt.

Abstract: A composition for treating keratinic fibres comprises an aqueous solution of a polymer containing thiol groups and of an organic disulphide. Preferably the polymer containing thiol groups has the general formula in which R is an alkylene radical, preferably of 2 to 4 carbon atoms, which may be unsubstituted or substituted by alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, carboxyl or carbalkoxy; R1 is hydrogen or alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; R11 and R111, which may be the same or different, each represents hydrogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, phenyl or alkoxy of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and n is an integer greater than 1 and less than 25 obtained by the process described in Specification 1,002,455. The disulphide is of the formula R1SSR2 in which R1 and R2 which may be the same or different, each represents an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms having a water-solubilizing substituent. The composition may also contain ammonia or an organic amine.ALSO:A method of treating keratine fibres comprises (a) applying to the fibres an aqueous solution of a polymer containing thiol groups and of an organic disulphide, said polymer and said disulphide being such that they are capable of reacting together under the conditions of use, to reduce said disulphide to the corresponding mocaptan and to oxidise said polymer to the corresponding polysulphide; (b) shaping the keratinic fibres after reduction of their disulphide linkages by said mercaptan is substantially complete; (c) allowing said reduced linkages to oxidise to the disulphide form. The polymer is preferably that described in Specification 1,002,455 (see Division C3). The solution is preferably applied at a pH of from 8.5 to 9.5. Hair is permanently waved to applying the solution to the locks of the hair, winding the locks of hair on rollers, again impregnating the locks with the solution, leaving the air rolled while the solution reacts, removing the hair from the rollers, and rinsing and drying the hair. The rollers in which the hair is wound are preferably heated. The solution may also contain swelling and penetrating agents.
