Abstract: In order to control oil accidents and to prevent the oil film drifting on the water from spreading, an oil adsorber (1) is provided, in particular shaped as abarrier (2). This barrier (2) is designed in two parts. Both cells (9, 10) are completely filled with glass fiber material or with corresponding fiber mats (11, 12). The glass fibers (28, 30) of the top cell (9) are waterproofed by an appropriate coating, whereas the fibers of the bottom cell (10) are not treated,so that they absorb water (6). In both cases epoxy resin or a synthetic resin having the same or similar properties are used, so that a long service life is achieved with optimum solidity and design possibilities. The oil adsorbers (1) thus obtained may be used both as barriers (2) and as flat suction elements, forexample to clear bilge waters from ships (3). It is also conceivable to use the flat or funnel-shaped elements for collecting components of an aqueous solution, for example.

Abstract: An aircraft holding (particularly) fuel tanks both in the fuselage and the wings connects the tanks together and has them filled with treated glass wool whose fibres have been treated to make them hydrophobic; they are also coated with binder which does not react with oil or similar.Depending upon which liquid fuel is used the glass fibres are coated with epoxy resin and/or methylone resin, hardener, methylpolysilane and/or silicone-methyl resin and dust-laying agent, either separately or with binder made beforehand by mixing an emulsion; the fibres are then assembled into adsorbers to match the sizes of the fuel tanks.

Abstract: An oil adsorber, in the form of a floating barrier for collecting oil or similar matter from water surfaces or for confining oil pools or streams, consists of binder-coated inorganic fibres joined together to form the barrier. The barrier (2) has two cells (9,10) one (9) filled with waterproofed fibre mats (11) and the other (10) filled with untreated water-absorbing fibre mats (12). Pref. the waterproofed fibre mats (11) are formed of 3 microns thick glass fibres with a binder of a long chain starch with added silicone or has a binder comprising mixts. of silicon resins and latex or other components. ADVANTAGE - The barrier always assumes the same shape on the water surface since the lower cell rapidly absorbs water to form a 'keel' ensuring precise barrier position. An oil slick cannot pass below the barrier, even at high wave heights, or over the barrier.

Abstract: To combat oil spillages and for rapid uptake of the escaped oil or oleaginous substances, there serves a process in which high-temperature-blown glass wool is hydrophobised and simultaneously bound using silicone and a starch serving as binder. The glass wool treated in accordance with this is then combined to form a cuttable, mat-shaped framework and is expediently dried at 150 DEG C. The then cohering three-dimensional framework mats are applied to the contaminated water sites and are left there for complete absorption, and are then together with the absorbed oil, subjected to intermediate storage and then mechanically or thermally disposed of or reprocessed. A corresponding adsorber is composed of this fine-fibre glass wool which is prepared and configured by coating with silicone and starch in such a way that adsorption of the oil away from the water surface or the ground surface is then possible.

Abstract: P15 procedure in which glass wool that ha been blown in the high temperature. range is rendered water repellant with silicon and a starch that serves as bonding agent, and simultaneously bound, is used to deal with so-called oil accidents and for the rapid pickup of oil or oil like substances that have escaped. The appropriately treated glass wool is them assembled to form a matlike lattice structure that can be cut, and this is then most expediently dried at 150.degree.C. The then cohesive three dimensional lattice mat is applied to the areas of water that have been affected, as is left there until it is saturated, when it is stored, together with the oil that it has picked up, and then disposed of mechanically or thermally, or reprocessed. A corresponding adsorber consists of fine-fibre glass wool that is so prepared by being encased with silicon and starch, and then configured, that adsorption of the oil from the surface of the water or from the ground is made possible.
