Abstract: 15,376. White, J., Booth, W. H., and Thomas, J. July 11. Golf clubs are provided with a solid striking- face of steel, iron, gun-metal, or other suitable metal, roughened or otherwise. A metal plate m is made to cover the striking-face, and also to protect the top and bottom of the club, as shown in Fig. 3, Sheet 1. The plate is attached to the wooden club by screws s, and is thickened at f to balance and weight the club. If desired, the metal plate may be attached by nuts and bolts or by screws to the face of the club only, the club being weighted by lead ; or, the inner face of the metal plate m may be roughened, as in Fig. 3, Sheet 3, so as to grip the club face, and may be attached by screws s passing through the sole plate, which is thickened at f as above.

Abstract: 22,816. Podmore, A. E., and Thomas, J. Oct. 20. Gas valves and cocks.-Relates to cocks or v a l v e s suitable for use with lamps having a flash light or a climbing-light igniting-arrangement, or with lamps having a cluster of burners and in which it is desired that either all the burners shall be alight or only one or some of them. A cylindrical body a is formed with a flat face c and ports e, f, ,g communicating with the supply nipple h, the igniting-burner nipple i and the main-burner nipple k respectively. Against the face c works gas-tight the face d of a hollow valve-piece b provided with ports v, w, and a screwed cap m. The valve-piece b is held in position by a spring stud n, which is prevented from rotating by a screw t entering a slot u therein. By the lamplighters' torch moving an arm 3 on the hollow piece b upwards, the igniting-jet is first put into communication with the supply, then both the igniting-jet and the main burner, and afterwards the main burner only. Two stops y, z are shown, but, when the valve is used in connection with a cluster of burners, other means may be provided to show the required intermediate positions.

Abstract: 13,677. Edmunds, O., and Thomas, J. June 17. Lubricators, sight-feed. An external gauge glass is provided and a wash-pipe for cleaning the sightfeed tube when by accident or otherwise it is filled with oil instead of water. The gauge glass a extends vertically in front of the oil-container b. At its lower end it communicates with a passage leading to the container, and therefore is charged with oil simultaneously with the container. The water for raising the oil passes in the ordinary way by the pipe j from the condenser i and water chamber i , the oil passing to the feed-tube g and to the engine by the pipe o and steam pipe p. The withdrawal of the oil is evidenced by the ascension of water in the gauge glass. To clear the sightfeed tube, the wash-pipe c communicates with the usual drain k and the container b, the communication with the drain being at a point behind the usual drain cock l for drawing water from the container. The sight-feed tube is shut-off by closing the valve m, and the cock n opened so that water enters the tube and expels the oil therefrom. The communications are also such that, during the clearing process, the water supplied by the pipe j passes, as shown by the arrows, into the wash-pipe c, and thence into the tube. Any remaining oil is removed by the admission of steam from the main steam pipe, the cocks being manipulated for that purpose.

Abstract: 4943. Thomas, J. Feb. 27. Wire &c. compensators.-The operating- wire K of the signal is passed over the draught pulley M on the cabin lever L, and connected to the sliding rack G, from which is suspended a compensating-weight J. The rack G works through guides B on the bracket A, and is adapted to be locked by the weighted lever D during the operation of the signal. The lever D has a pin F in the path of the rod I connected to the lever L. In operation, when the lever L is actuated to lower the signal, it first raises the rod I and releases the lever D, allowing the latter lever to lock the rack G, so that. on the continuation of the stroke of the lever L, the signal is lowered. On the return movement, the rod I disengages the lever D from the rack at the end of the stroke, leaving the rack free to compensate the connection for changes of temperature. For short-distance signals, the action of the draught pulley M in increasing the travel of the wire K may be counteracted by passing the wire round a pulley on the signal arm, and fastening the end of the wire to the signal post.

Abstract: 13,365. Thomas, J. June 28. Couplings, automatic.-Fig. 1 shows an end elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan. The rotatable drawhead B of each vehicle has rounded top and bottom projections or hooks G, G . When two vehicles are brought together, the draw-heads rotate in opposite directions until they engage in the corresponding recesses in the draw-head, and the levers C fall down and lock the parts. The vehicles are uncoupled by lifting one of the levers C.

Abstract: 15,508. Thomas, J., and Charlesworth, S. July 15. Sewage and foul waters, treating; settling.- Suspended matters are removed from sewage and trade effluents, before filtering or running the liquid into adjacent streams, by means of the settling-plant shown in plan in Fig. 3. The sewage &c. flows along a channel a, provided with a floating skimmer a , for directing the floating matter into a bye-pass b, and with partitions d of suitable shape and material for directing the solids towards the bottom of the channel a, which communicates with a chamber c. The liquid flows over an adjustable door f, which also assists in separating the suspended matters and conducts them into the chamber c. The solids, accumulating in the chamber c, are removed by the perforated buckets g of an elevator j. The door f may be used for shutting off the sewage from the chamber c, when required.
