    Abstract: A process of preparing coated carrier particles for electrostatographic developer coated carrier particles for use in the development of electrostatic latent images are provided by mixing carrier core materials with powdered thermoplastic resin particles having a size of between 0.1 micron and 30 microns, and comprising between 0.05 and 3 percent by weight of the coated carrier particles. The carrier core materials are mixed with the resin particles until the resin particles mechanically and/or electrostatically adhere to the core materials and the mixture is heated to a temperature of between 160 DEG C and 345 DEG C for between 120 minutes and 20 minutes so that the resin particles melt and fuse to the carrier core materials. The coated carrier particles are cooled, classified to the desired particle size, and mixed with finely-divided toner particles to form a developer mixture. The process is especially advantageous for coating carrier particles with resin materials having poor solubility characteristics.

    Abstract: 1411237 Electro-photography XEROX CORP 18 Dec 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 58250/72 Heading G2H An electro-photographic gravure member 1 either has lands coated with a photo-conductive layer 4, or is entirely surfaced with photoconductive material, and has valleys 3 filled with a developing medium which is liquid during development and during transfer of a developed image to a copy sheet. If the gravure member has its lands coated with photo-conductive material the shadow areas of the imaged member retain a previously applied charge, the developing medium and exposed areas lose their charge and the surface of the developing medium is distorted by electrostatic forces in the shadow areas, so that a copy sheet receives developing medium from the shadow areas and, if the developing medium is pigmented, becomes a positive print. A gravure member entirely surfaced with photo-conductive material, however, forms a distorted surface on the medium in its exposed areas, as the pigmented medium shields the photo-conductive material beneath it, and so does not lose its charge. This time the copy sheet receives a negative print. The developing medium may be solid during exposure, and be melted for development and transfer.

The binder may be selected from polyacrylates and methacrylates, polyallyl diglycol carbonate, cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate, an ionomer resin, polybutane, polyvinyl formal, polyesters, copolymers styrene with acrylates, styrene-butadiene copolymer and poly N-vinyl carbazole. The pigment may be SiO 2 , a silicate e.g. hydrated magnesium silicate or BaSO 4 .
