Abstract:
Embossing apparatus includes a pair of backup rollers rotatable about parallel axes and mounted for back-and-forth movement relative to each other to form a variable width space therebetween. Associated with the backup rollers are back stops to set width of the space between the rollers. Apparatus is provided for pressing into the space between the backup rollers an unsecured, freely positionable embossing roller having a diameter larger than the width of the space. An embossing nip is formed between the embossing roller and at least one of the backup rollers.

A method for embossing foil material by inserting the foil material in the roll nip between two rolls being provided with projections, each projection of a roll being surrounded on all sides by projections of the other roll, each projection of a roll is axially offset relative to the peripherally adjacent projections on the same roll, the projections of one roll form lines oblique to an axial line and so that the foil material from each projection peak on each roll is stretched to the surrounding projection peaks of the other roll.

Abstract:
Disclosed are multi-ply embossed tissue products having improved softness, strength, embossment clarity and/or embossment height compared to prior art embossed tissue products. The multi-ply tissue products may comprise an embossed tissue ply having a basis weight less than about 25 grams per square meter (gsm) and relatively deep embossments, such as an embossment height from about 500 to about 1,000 μm and relatively narrow bottom portions compared to top portions. The combination of these elements provides an aesthetically pleasing and well-defined embossment, while improving important tissue product properties such as sheet and roll bulk and softness.

An embossing device and a method for embossing, employing an electromagnetic induction device such as to induce an eddy current prevalently on the outer surface of an embossing roller. The eddy currents are such as to prevalently heat the outer surface of the embossing roller.
