Abstract: A pair of improved golf shoes (10a, 10b) has an inner flange (14) extending longitudinally along the inner side of the shoes and an outer flange (12) extending longitudinally along the outer side of the shoes. The inner flanges (14) and the outer flanges (12) extend outwardly beyond the exterior surfaces of the uppers (20) of the shoes. On one of the improved shoes the outer flange (12) extends outwardly farther than the inner flange (14). On the other shoe, the inner and outer flanges extend substantially the same distance beyond the exterior surface of the upper. Heels (18) having outwardly extending flanges (19) are provided. One of the heels (D3) extends outwardly over substantially its entire outer edge. The flange of the other heel (D6) extends outwardly beyond the upper for only a portion of its inner edge and is flush with the upper for the remaining portion of its outer edge. A portion of the shoe (28) disposed below the ball of the foot of the user is thicker than the region disposed below the heel of the user in order to balance the user. The toes of the user may be braced upward to shift the weight of the user back to better balance the user.

Abstract: A shoe sole construction which features an outer sole (18) having at least one opening (26) through which a protrusion (30) of a less dense midsole (16) extends. The cutout area (26) of the more dense outsole (18) decreases the overall weight of the sole (12), while the less dense protrusion (30) aids in cushioning the foot to provide greater comfort and support. Other protrusions (32 and 68) may also be provided through others openings in the outsole to further lessen weight and increase the cushioning effect on the foot. Additionally, grooves (42) may be provided on the upper surface (40) of the midsole (16) to increase flexibility of the sole (12) and further aid in cushioning the foot and providing peripheral support where needed. The invention may be applied to athletic shoes (Figures 1-9), a women's high-heeled shoe (Figures 10-14), or other footwear.
