The connector body (15) has a cam surface (69),and the receptacle (17) cooperates with the cam surface (69) when the receptacle (17) and connector body (15) are appropriately positioned to urge the connector body (15) farther into the cavity (123) to place optical portions (109,131) of the connector body (15) and the receptacle (17) into substantial engagement.
Abstract:
A disposable lancet assembly is provided, including a housing serving as a lance-holder guide, a lance holder body reciprocable in the housing guide, and a flat-bladed lance mounted in one end of the lance holder body. Included in the invention are integral strategically positioned abutments which serve dual functions providing snap-action drive for the lancet, together with steps for lance movement control. Also included are integral resilient means on the lance holder body providing damping of the lance drive in the puncture direction with automatic withdrawal of the lance into the housing.

Abstract:
@ A multiple liquid sample needle assembly is provided. The assembly includes a housing with a sample receiving chamber having translucent or transparent walls for determining whether access to the sample source in question has been obtained. The invention utilizes a highly absorbent material in a form which allows venting of gases displaced from the housing chamber by the liquid sample being obtained, which material expands upon contact with the liquid sample to provide a liquid impervious barrier. The improvement in this invention is the absorbent material in a separate sleeve-like form which may be a laminate or a compacted tablet sleeve of the absorbent material for rapid and easy insertion between the two hub parts forming the assembly housing. The arrangement herein is particularly appropriate for mass production techniques in that two housing parts may have inserted therein the tablet sleeve of the invention, rather than as in previous approaches where an absorbent material similar to that utilized herein in a sleeve or tablet like form was introduced in a loose non-precise powder form for a relatively imperfect seal between two housing parts. The invention herein contemplates sonic welding, gluing, or snap fitting of the housing parts together in a further production line procedure.

Abstract:
@ A syringe for collecting blood samples, especially arterial blood samples, comprises a syringe cylinder (11) and a piston assembly (12) displaceably arranged therein. The piston assembly defines a venting passage (25, 37, 31) through which gas or air may escape when arterial blood flows into the cylinder space (17) under the influence of the arterial blood pressure. The venting passage is controlled by valve means (23, 31), which may selectively and reversably be opened and closed independently of axial displacement of the piston assembly. The valve means may, for example, be operated by rotating a piston rod through a predetermined angle or by means of a valve actuating lever (35), which is biased towards a position in which the valve means are closed, and which may be tilted to an open position by depressing a finger grip (36) positioned at the free outer end of the piston rod (32).
Abstract:
@ A syringe for collecting a sample of blood or another liquid comprises a syringe cylinder and a piston arranged displaceably therein. One or more axially extending recesses are formed in the inner wall of the syringe cylinder axially spaced from the inner end thereof. The recess or recesses contain a material which is pervious to gas and impervious to liquid, such as a hydrofobic material, a hydrophilic material with capillary effect, or a material which swells when contacted by liquid. The sample collecting chamber within the cylinder may be vented to the atmosphere by placing the piston in the recessed area of the cylinder. Arterial blood may then pass into the syringe under arterial blood pressure, and the flow of blood into the syringe is automatically stopped when the sample collecting chamber of the syringe has been filled, because blood cannot pass the liquid impervious material arranged in the recesses. The axial innermost portion of the inner cylinder wall, which is not recessed, may co-operate with the piston in a conventional manner so as to provide a suction effect within the blood collecting chamber, if desired.
Abstract:
A blood collector comprising a collection container in the form of a tube having a forward end adapted for drawing of blood into the container and an opened rear end, a closure unit adapted for closing the opened rear end of the collection container, and a mechanism for allowing passage of air when blood is flowing into said container and preventing passage of air and blood when said container is filled with blood, said mechanism having a filter member containing water insoluble but water-swellable polymeric material and provided to at least the contact portion of the closure member with collected blood. Air contained in the blood collecting space of the collection container is expelled through the valving element by the collected blood which rises to a desired level for expelling air from said space practically completely. As the clood contacts the water insoluble but water-swellable high polymeric material contained in the valving element, the material is swollen into gel body to block the air passage in the valving element connecting to outside of the collector. Thus blood analysis may be effected without influences by outside air and air otherwise contained in the blood collecting space.
