    Abstract: A medical infusion system has a pump and cassette combination for conducting fluid or semi-solids from an upstream flexible conduit portion (11) to a downstream flexible conduit portion (13) of the system. The cassette (18) includes a rigid enclosure defining a pumping cavity (25) and has a window with a diaphragm (26) spanning the window. The diaphragm is engaged by an actuator (28) on the pump for varying the volume of the pumping cavity. Restrictors (21, 22) at the upstream and downstream portions close off and open, respectively, the flow into and out of the pumping cavity in a sequence related to the actuator movement such that the pumping cavity alternatively is filled and substantially emptied. To minimize the detrimental effects of air in the pumping cavity: 1) the actuator is operated to substantially increase the volume of the pumping cavity prior to opening of the upstream portion; and 2) the actuator is operated to reduce the volume of the pumping cavity to a residual volume of less than about 0.07 ml subsequent to closing of the upstream portion and opening of the downstream portion.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for analyzing pulmonary function including diffusing capacity and cardiac output or local pulmonary blood flow while necessarily determining alveolar volume in order to complete the above-noted analysis. In order to provide a rapid response in each of the abovenoted analyses or determinations, appropriate gases are caused to be inhaled and exhaled through a sample cell wherein a percentage of each gas may be constantly monitored during inhalation and exhalation by means of non-dispersive infrared absorption techniques, the sample cell and associated components of the pulmonary function analyzing device including additional features to facilitate the abovenoted analyses and determinations, the combination of gases employed for monitoring the pulmonary functions being selected to permit accurate detection by infrared absorption techniques.

    Abstract: An improved sensor support subassembly (10) for a chemical sensor (12) in the testing of gaseous emissions. The sensor subassembly (10) includes a sensor unit (12) slidably engaged with a gas intake manifold block (40). The sensor unit (12) has a cylindrical base (20) which forms the sensor inlet (26). The manifold block (40) includes a gas intake (46), a gas channel (42), and a Ushaped slot (50, 50a) for slidably engaging the cylindrical base (20) within the manifold block (40) to form an air-tight passage between the sensor inlet (26) and the gas channel (42). The sensor subassembly (10) also includes a sealing ring (34) for insuring an air-tight seal between the sensor unit (12) and manifold block (40). This allows the sensor unit (12) to be rotated about the axis of the cylindrical base (20) and use of a card-edge connector (16).

    Abstract: Automatic zeroing apparatus zeroes an infrared gas analyzer automatically upon the occurrence of preselected conditions to indicate zero in the absence of absorption of infrared radiation by a gas mixture being analyzed. The gas analyzer has a sample cell for containing a gas mixture to be analyzed. Infrared radiation directed through the sample cell is detected at a preselected wavelength to produce a detection signal. A signal processor outputs a signal systematically related to the difference between the detection signal and a reference signal. For zeroing the sample cell is filled with gas substantially nonabsorbent of infrared radiation at the respective characteristic wavelength. A comparator produces an error signal when the output signal differs from zero. A gain control automatically controls the signal level of the detection signal to reduce the output signal substantially to zero with the nonabsorbent gas filling the sample cell. The preselected conditions may include the passage of a predetermined time and a temperature drift beyond a predetermined limit.

First filter cavity (103) includes a coarse filter, (121) through (125), for filtering particulate matter and for condensate condensation, with condensate draining into second filter cavity (105), which has disposed therein a fine filter (141), (142), for filtering condensate. Outlet passage (284) connected to second filter cavity (105) allows withdrawal of the condensate. Third filter cavity (107) has a fine filter (160) for filtering the exhaust gas and is coupled to first filter cavity (103). Second outlet passage (182) connects the third filter cavity (107) to a pump for removal of the gas to be analyzed. A multiple filter assembly in a single housing with large fine filter area, minimal void volume, minimal interconnections, and convenient access to the individual filters is provided, which achieves precise filtration of gases for analysis.
