Abstract: 473,348. Image dissectors. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., and JONES, V. April 9, 1936, No. 10544. [Class 39 (i)] In image dissectors with an electron image from a photo-electric cathode 2 deflected over, and scanned by, an aperture 4 in a target electrode 3, the electron stream passing through this aperture 4 is amplified by electron multiplication at foraminated secondary emitting electrodes. The stream may strike an impervious electrode 13 inclined at 45‹ to the incident electrons and is then further multiplied at fine mesh grids 5.. 8 before collection at the output electrode 9. The grids may have activating coatings and may be biassed by a potentiometer 14 within the envelope 1. A suppressor electrode 12 is placed between the electrodes 3, 13 to prevent the flow of secondary electrons to the electrode 3, and to form the actual limiting aperture for the electrons flowing to the electrode 13. In a modification described in the Provisional Specification, the electrodes are so biassed that secondary electrons flow back through some grids, for example, secondaries from the electrode 9 How through the openmeshed grid 8 to the grid 7, a negative picture signal being obtained across the resistance 11.

Abstract: 472,686. Automatic control systems. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., and WILLANS, P. W. March 28, 1936, No. 9250. [Class 38 (iv)] Oscillation frequency.-Two oscillation generators of commensurable frequency are interlocked by combining the output of one with a pulse derived from the second, of a shorter duration than the periodic time of the first, and deriving from the combined potential wave a direct current or p.d. wherewith to control the frequency of either. The lower frequency oscillator 1 of the kind described in Specification 456,640, [Group XL], produces a peaked wave in the coil 3 and the second, similar, oscillator 2 by means of coil 4 and integrating elements 5, G, a saw-tooth wave. The combined outputs are fed through a condenser to a rectifier 7 so that it operates as a peak rectifier. The output of 7 is smoothed and fed to a valve 12 and the potential developed in the resistance 13 in its circuit is applied to the circuit of the oscillator 2 to modify its frequency as required. Any oscillator, the frequency of which can be controlled by a potential difference may be used, e.g. a ticking-grid oscillator or multivibrator.

Abstract: 472,645. Valve generating circuits; television. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., and TINGLEY, G. R. March 26, 1936, No. 9007. [Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] An oscillator for generating two sawtoothed oscillations of different frequency comprises a single multi-grid valve 1, back - coupled circuits being connected to the anode and the adjacent grid for generating one oscillation, e.g. of frame frequency, and two other grids being back-coupled to produce the other oscillation, e.g. of line frequency. The higher frequency is shunted from the outer electrodes by condensers 9, 10. Synchronizing pulses may be applied to additional grids, or to the back-coupling transformers 2, 5 by additional coils 11, 12. The ratio of the two frequencies may be an integer. Grid leaks and condensers are provided in the circuits of the first and third grids, and each separate oscillator operates similarly to that described in Specification 465,344. Television scanning- coils may be capacity-coupled to one of the coils of the transformers 2, 5 as described in Specification 456,138, or the transformer coils may themselves form the scanning coils as described in Specification 463,972. The compound generator may be used to generate a wave-form which is the sum of two saw-toothed wave-forms as described in Specification 423,101.

Abstract: 471,191. Cathode ray tubes. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., LANCE, T. M. C., JONES, V. A., and WILLANS, P. W. Feb. 29, 1936, No. 6137. [Class 39 (i)] A charge storage electrode for use in television apparatus, which is adapted to be charged by a composite beam of electrons so as to produce thereon an electric image corresponding to a picture, comprises a metallic electrode coated with a layer of aluminium oxide. The oxide is adapted to emit secondary electrons by which the charging, or in some cases the discharging by a scanning beam of electrons, is effected. The electrode may be a plate or grid of aluminium oxidized superficially by heating in air or oxygen or by anodic oxidation in an electrolyte of chromic acid. In one form of apparatus the image to be transmitted is thrown on a photoelectric gauze to produce a composite beam of photoelectrons which is focused onto the aluminium oxide surface and charges it negatively, or positively if secondary emission is predominant. A scanning beam then either produces secondary electrons in numbers corresponding to the negative charge, or neutralizes the positive charge, respectively. In another form, a grid-like storage electrode charged by a modulated scanning beam, controls a flooding electron beam. Specification 461,197 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification any insulating metallic oxide may be substituted for the aluminium oxide.

Abstract: 470,922. Valve generating circuits. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., and JOHNSTONE, D. M. Feb. 24, 1936, No. 5492. [Class 40 (v)] A scanning-oscillator is arranged to produce current of saw-tooth form through its anode circuit by providing a back coupling between two grid circuits, one of which includes a resistance - capacity combination. The anode circuit may include a scanning- coil, or a resistance with the deflecting-plates connected across it. As shown, a condenser 3 is connected between resistances 2, 6, both of which may be variable, across the supply source. The positive side of the condenser 3 is connected to the inner grid of a valve 1 through a coil 4 which is coupled to a coil 5 in the circuit of the positively-polarized screen grid. The anode circuit includes an inductance 7 and is connected by a condenser 8 to the scanning-coils. The condenser 3 is slowly charged through the resistances 2, 6 and when the inner grid reaches a certain positive voltage the valve breaks into self-oscillation and the condenser quickly discharges. Synchronizing pulses may be applied to the suppressor grid or to the inner grid by connections across the resistance 2. If electrostatic scanning is employed, the anode impedance 7 is resistive.

[Class 40 (iii)] The object or screen 7 is simultaneously and separately traversed by the ordinary and extraordinary rays 5, 6 from a double-image prism 4 or the like, such as that described in Specification 459,171, [Group XX]. The separate signals are transmitted over a common channel 15 by so altering the frequencies of one set of signals that they occupy a band of frequencies which does not overlap the band occupied by the other signals. At the receiver the signals are restored to the original frequencies, and modulate the ordinary and extraordinary rays, Fig. 2 (not shown).

Abstract: 467,188. Television transmitters. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., and LANCE, T. M. C. Dec. 11, 1935, No. 34372. [Class 40 (iii)] In Specification 431,339, a system of intercalated scanning is described in which a cathode ray beam is deflected at varying periodicity. According to the present invention, synchronizing signals for such a scanning system are produced by mixing two oscillations of different frequency and applying them to a device which produces an impulse when its input exceeds a predetermined value. In an example for a two-intercalated scan, a 50-cycle sinusoidal potential A, Fig. 2, is applied to R1, Fig. 1, and a 25-cycle saw-tooth potential B, Fig. 2 is applied to R2, Fig. 1. The mixture C, Fig. 2, appears across R3, Fig. 1, and is applied to G, which produces an impulse when its input exceeds the level V1, Fig. 2, so that impulses D are produced. The saw-tooth potential B may be distorted so as to rise more sharply just before the return stroke. The sinusoidal oscillation may control the saw-tooth generator. Specification 431,458 also is referred to.

Abstract: 465,055. Television. BAIRD TELEVISION, Ltd., and WRIGHT, E. E. Oct. 29, 1935, No. 29863. [Class 40 (iii)] An oscillator for producing scanning oscillations at line and frame frequencies comprises a single discharge tube 4 connected directly across the line-frequency condenser 1, and connected through an impedance 8 across the frame-frequency condenser 5. The condensers may be charged from the same or different sources 2, 7 through separate constant-current devices 3, 6. The discharge tube 4 may be a vacuum valve of tetrode or pentode type, or a gas-filled triode. The tube 4 is tripped by short impulses at line frequency, and by longer impulses at frame frequency. The impedance 8 prevents more than a slight loss of charge on condenser 5 when the condenser 1 is discharged by the short line-frequency impulse. Specification 444,133 is referred to.
