Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact amplifier of a high energy and super short light pulse. SOLUTION: This system is achieved by a light pulse amplification and emission system consisting of a pump light source 100 which generates a light pump pulse having a preliminarily dertermined wide, a signal light source 130 generating a light signal pulse, a combining optical system 160 which receives the light pump pulse and the light signal pulse to combine them and is for supply the combined light pulses, a parametric amplifier 170 which is consisting of a quasi-phase-matched crystal amplifying the light signal pulse by using the energy of the light pump pulse while receiving the combined light pulses and an application unit which receives the amplified output of the amplifier and applies it to a clearly expressed position. Preferably, this system is composed of a chirped pulse amplification and emission system consisting of the light pulse amplification and emission system and a compressor 180 which receives the light signal pulse amplified in the parametric amplifier and compresses it.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate an ultrashort optical pulse having a variable or tunable wavelength from a single light source which emits an ultrashort optical pulse having a fixed wavelength by making a wavelength conversion channel to include an optical parametric generation part for parametric generation of ultrashort pulses different by wavelength. SOLUTION: An ultrashort pulse laser(UPL) 10 to generate an ultrashort optical pulse having a fixed wavelength and at least one wavelength conversion channel(WCC) 121 to 12n are included. The UPL 10 is a mode lock fiber oscillator capable of supplying a picosecond or femtosecond, optical pulse whose typical pulse energy is 10PJ(10×10-12J) to 10NJ(10×10-9J) and typical average power is 0.1 to 100 mW. It is desirable that this fiber oscillator has an all fiber resonator which has not any fiber dispersion control element. Wavelength conversion in WCCs 121 to 12n is performed in an optical waveguide.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize the manufacturing cost of a passively modelocked fiber laser of high reliability by employing saturable absorber together with a highly- birefringent erbium doped optical fiber. SOLUTION: A WDM coupler 22 is arranged in a pig tail 18 between a laser diode 16 and an annular splice 20. A signal light entering the pig tail 18 through a dichroic mirror 14 from a fiber 12 is isolated from a pump by the WDM coupler 22, and directed toward an output part. A semiconductor saturable absorber mirror 24 is arranged on the other end of a highly- birefringent fiber 12. The fiber is made to abut against the mirror 24 and bonded to it. Low power reflectivity larger than 80% and carrier life of 10 psec can be obtained. That is, when a pumping laser is switched on several times, a modelocked operation along either of two polarization axes can be observed while being accompanied by random distribution between the two axes.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate ultrashort pulses of variable or tunable wavelength from a single light source, by installing a first part constituting a laser system generating ultrashort pulses of fixed wavelength, and a second part constituting at least one or, preferably, a plurality of wavelength converting channels. SOLUTION: This system contains an ultrashort pulse laser(UPL) 10 for generating ultrashort light pulses of fixed wavelength, and at least one wavelength conversion channel(WCC) 121-12n. Wavelength conversion of the WCC is performed in an optical waveguide. An optical parametric generation(OPG) is used for a specially designed waveguide in ferroelectric optical material which is periodically polled. For enabling accesse to a plurality of light wavelengths with a single waveguide, converted light wavelength is adjusted by adjusting temperature of the waveguide. That is, by accurately selecting the pumping wavelength and the period of periodical polling, conformation to generation of light wavelength in which two single WCC's are necessary is enabled.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a peak intensity and pulse energy larger than those achieved with a single mode(SM) fiber, by raising a capacity for accumulating energy in an optical fiber amplifier before a desirable non-linearity and gain saturation start. SOLUTION: The optical amplifier device comprises a fiber oscillator 10 which, as a laser source, generates such an input beam as comprises a mode close to diffraction limit, a multiplex mode fiber amplifier 12, a mode converter 14, and a pump source 20. The mode converter 14, receiving an input beam, converts the mode of input beam so that it conforms to a basic mode of the multiplex mode fiber amplifier 12 for generating a mode-converted input beam to be inputted in the multiplex mode fiber amplifier 12. The pump source 20 optically pumps the multiplex mode fiber amplifier 12, to generate a strong output beam amplified, intrinsically, with the basic mode.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form the two-dimensional cross sectional image of a sample piece without deflecting the incident angle of a laser beam by generating plural pulses having different wavelength, detecting the two-dimensional visual field of radiation from the temporally and spatially overlapped part of plural pulses and detecting radiated light from a stimulated phosphor in a crossing area. SOLUTION: Parallel beams 36 from the light source 37 including the pulses 40 and 42 having wavelength λ2 and λ3 separated by a specified delay time are made perpendicularly incident on the sample piece to be examined 38 labeled with the phosphor stimulated only by the simultaneous absorption of two photons. Then, a window 44 coated with a film reflecting the light having the wavelength λ2 to an opposite side to the incident beams 36 on the sample 38 and transmitting the light having the wavelength other than the wavelength λ2 is disposed. Therefore, the pulse 40 having the wavelength λ2 is made incident on the sample 38 first, reflected by the window 44, advances in a reverse direction in the sample 38 to cross with the pulse having the wavelength λ3 . At this crossing time, a 'hot cake' area satisfies the stimulating condition of the phosphor and the phosphor existing in this area radiates two- photon luminescence so as to form an image surface 46 capable of making the image visualizable both in the case of reflection and transmission.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a means for generating a high output optical pulse of femto-seconds. SOLUTION: The high output optical pulse generator has a fiber oscillator 10 for generating signal light, an amplification fiber 11 to be used also as a Soliton-Raman compressor(SRC) capable of receiving signal light with a non- linear phase delay and amplifying and compressing the received signal and a periodical poling LNbO (PPLN) 20 to be a frequency converter for frequency- converting the amplified optical pulse into a high output optical pulse. Dispersion is compensated by a dispersion compensating fiber 18. An optical pulse is reflected by a Faraday rotation mirror(FRM) 19 and a double pulse format is taken. Energy from pump light injected from a pump 16 is obtained, a signal light is amplified and compressed and a high output optical pulse of femto- seconds can be obtained by wavelength frequency-converted by the PPLN frequency converter 20.

The reflected light passes through an optical path d3 and passes through an optical path d4 through a condenser 104 and enters in a synthesizer 106 and combined with the reference beam passed through a variable time delay element 105 and enters into a time gate 107 of nonlinear amplitude doubling crystal. The gate 107 is opened by coincidence of a pulse when delay time between the dividing means 102 and the synthesizer 106 and the gate 107 agree between the both beams and it is detected by a detecting device 108 to decide the distance from the object 100 accurately.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide single mode and multi-mode holey fibers having large core dimensions, and a device and a system using these fibers as a laser and an amplifier.SOLUTION: The number of layers or rows of holes 170, 190, and 210 about cores 166, 186, and 206 is used to coarsely tune the leakage losses of the fundamental and higher modes of a signal, thereby allowing the non-fundamental modes to be substantially eliminated by leakage over a given length of fiber. Fine tuning of leakage losses is performed by adjusting hole dimensions d and/or spacing Λ to yield desired operation with a desired leakage loss of the fundamental mode. Resulting holey fibers have large hole dimensions d and spacing Λ when compared to traditional fibers and conventional fibers that propagate a single mode, and consequently the cores 166, 186, and 206 are large.
