Abstract: This invention relates generally to a novel method of manufacturing a composite body. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method for modifying the resultant properties of a composite body, by, for example, minimizing the amount of porosity present in the composite body. Additives such as TaG, ZrC, ZrB2, VC, NbC, WC, W2B5 and/or MoO2B5 can be combined with a boron carbide material (2) which is thereafter reactively infiltrated by a parent metal (3). The composite body comprises one or more boron-containing compounds (e.g., a boride or a boride and a carbide) which is made by the reactive infiltration of molten parent metal (3) into the boron carbide mass (2). Particular emphasis is placed upon modifying the properties of a ZrB2-ZrC-Zr composite body. However, the methods disclosed in the application are believed to be generic to a number of parent metals and preform materials.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method for producing a self-supporting ceramic composite by the oxidation of a parent metal (10) to form a polycrystalline ceramic material consisting essentially of the oxidation reaction product of the parent metal (10) with an oxidant, including a vapor-phase oxidant, and, optionally, one or more metallic constituents. A permeable filler material, such as a preform (14), with at least one surface bearing a permeble stratum (18), is contacted with a body of molten parent metal (10) heated to a temperature above its melting point but below the melting point of the oxidation reaction product. At least a portion of the oxidation reaction product is maintained in contact with and between the molten metal (10) and oxidant to transport the molten metal through the oxidation reaction product toward the permeable stratum (18) and into contact with the oxidant so that the oxidation reaction product continues to form at the interface between the oxidant and previously formed oxidation reaction product that has infiltrated the filler material. The reaction is continued to infiltrate at least a portion of the stratum (18) with the oxidation reaction product and to produce an intermediate ceramic body having an adjacent ceramic composite overlaid with a ceramic stratum. The ceramic stratum is removed from the underlying ceramic composite to produce a self-supporting ceramic composite having the surface established by the permeable stratum (18).

Abstract: A ceramic body is formed of alumina obtd. by oxidn. of molten aluminium with an oxygen-contg. gas under such conditions that the product remains in contact with the metal to form a body through which metal is continuously drawn to the oxidant interface to cause growth of the body. The body may also include non-oxidised metal components. - The body is caused to have a refined microstructure by including a process modifier either in the molten metal or in contact with it. - In a modification a body of filler is located adjacent to the metal bath so that it becomes embedded in the oxidn. product. Pref. the modifier is Cu, Ni, Fe, Zr, Cr, Ti, W, Nb or Co. - The modifier is pref. used in an amt. of 0.1-10 wt.% based on the aluminium metal. It may be alloyed with the latter, applied as a powder to the growth surface of the initial aluminium body, or mixed with the filler, which may be silicon carbide. (Dwg.0/3)
