Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method for navigating through content on a device including stored information organized according to channels. SOLUTION: Content associated with the channels is selected and viewed on a display of the device with at least four selectors used. The selectors are mapped to specific functions based on an operating state, mode, or view of the device. The device includes a current operating state, which may correspond to a channel splash, a channel view, an extended view, and a mode splash operating state. The selectors have consistent interaction in the device for the channel splash and mode splash operating states, while certain selectors are mapped to context specific functions for the other operating states. Context specific functionality allows for much flexibility in the behavior of the device. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the expression of a synthetic user interface element. SOLUTION: A selective visualizable node is defined and the node is displayed according to its definition. Simple views of expression of one or a plurality of user interfaces are provided. For example, some nodes for expressing the user interface element in hierarchical expression are made into selectively visualizable. Such nodes can be visualized under certain circumstances and unvisualized under other circumstances. In this instantiated method, simple expression views (for example, not to visualize the selective visualizable node) are provided. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method, in which a variety of display media and font characteristics suitable for readable parameters are automatically determined for any language. SOLUTION: A system, a method and a computer-readable medium determine a suitable line-height automatically, in matching with a variety of display media and a variety of readable parameters of arbitrary languages. The object is a method of determining the line-height of a text string, and a step of determining the value to indicate the number of clusters per one em of the text string and a step to carry out scaling of a default line-height by the exponential function. In another embodiment, the object is a data structure constituted to hold a plurality of elements, to define the font characteristics and a computer system provided with a module combined with the data structure. This module adjusts the line-height automatically, when reference conditions change by using font characteristics and by applying the exponential function to the average width of the cluster having the font characteristics. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system which correctly verifies whether an authenticity of a telephone number reported by a request from a wireless device belongs to the wireless device. SOLUTION: The wireless device and a computing system of a receiving side communicate through a network of a communication enterprise. A request of a service is submitted to the computing system of the receiving side and the computing system of the receiving side returns an authentication key back. The authentication key is routed as being related to the wireless device by using the telephone number stated clearly in the request of the service. However, the authentication key is sent through a different data transport mechanism. The wireless device verifies through a proper communication that the wireless device submits the request and receives a response. As a result, the telephone number is verified as being related to the wireless device. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanism for more reliable communications in an environment in which network addresses are tentatively assigned to wireless devices. SOLUTION: A wireless device constructs a message that includes a cutoff period, and then transmits the message over a carrier network to a receiving computing system. The cutoff period indicates the time beyond which the receiving computing system should not send a response to the message using the temporary network address that was assigned to the wireless device at the time the message was transmitted. The wireless device is kept connected to thereby retain that address until the cutoff period expires. When the response is ready to send back, if the cutoff period has not yet expired, the response is sent to the wireless device using the same network address that the wireless device had at the time the original message was sent. Otherwise, when the cutoff period is exceeded, then the receiving computing system does not attempt transmission of the response using that network address. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for coding an image of a document and finding out a position of a digital pen based upon the image. SOLUTION: A document page is encoded into codes associated with various positions of the document page. The codes are assembled into a codebook (301). Next, captured images are similarly encoded (302, 303) and searched against the codes in the codebook (304). One or a plurality of codes and associated positions are returned (305), thereby obtaining one or a plurality of possible positions for the captured images (306). COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display controller which permits a plurality of display devices to be operated by a single cable and a single display adapter. SOLUTION: The display controller provides custom EDID information to a computer to which it is attached. This information can include information about a single virtual display surface provided by all display devices and can include information about each of the individual monitors of display devices, which contains position information of the individual display devices in a single composite display surface. In the case that a computer recognizes the EDID for the plurality of display systems, the operating system of the computer and/or applications running on the computer can understand and utilize the heterogeneous nature of the display surface and can optimize display quality and presentation for a user. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for specifying a position of a movable member in an electronic input device within a range of resolutions defined in advance. SOLUTION: Two offset signals indicate the position of the movable member. The time required for each signal to exceed a threshold level is measured and made into inverse to make clear a relationship of offset sine waves. The offset sine waves are plotted to each other to make clear an approximate circle of an inverse time sample with respect to a cycle. A central reference value with respect to each signal is specified by using the minimum time and the maximum time made into corresponding inverses. As a correlation of the times made into inverses, a quadrant of the said circle is specified. A sector most corresponding to the position of the movable member is specified out of a plurality of predefined sectors defining resolutions within the quadrant. The number of sectors between the position samples of the movable member are accumulated and communicated to a host device. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retrieval substitution device, method, storage medium and program facilitating the detection and use of a character string in another document during the formation of a document to reduce a user's operation labor. SOLUTION: When the user gives a retrieval substitution candidate and an object of retrieval, the retrieval substitution program 120 detects the same character string as the retrieval substitution candidate from the object of retrieval and displays a part of the object including this character string on a display screen. When the user designates a prescribed character string in the display as a character string to be substituted, the character string of the substitution object is automatically substituted to the character string to be substituted.
