A composition comprising a functional polymeric phase change material, the functional polymeric phase change material carrying at least one reactive function, wherein the reactive function is capable of forming at least a first covalent bond. In certain embodiments, the reactive function is capable of forming at least a first covalent bond with a second material. In other embodiments, the functional polymeric phase change material comprises at least one crystallizable section and may also comprise a backbone chain and a plurality of side chains, wherein the plurality of side chains form the crystallizable section.
Abstract:
Cellulosic fibers having enhanced reversible thermal properties and methods of forming such cellulosic fibers are described. In one embodiment, a cellulosic fiber includes a fiber body formed of an elongated member. The elongated member includes a cellulosic material and a temperature regulating material dispersed within the cellulosic material. The temperature regulating material includes a phase change material having a transition temperature in the range of -5°C to 125°C. The cellulosic fiber can be formed via a solution spinning process and can be used in various products where thermal regulating properties are desired. For example, the cellulosic fiber can be used in textiles, apparel, footwear, medical products, containers and packagings, buildings, appliances, and other products.

The fiber includes a mixture of a first polymer and a thermal stabilizing material surrounded by a second polymer which forms a sheath for the fiber. The thermal stabilizing material may be at least one phase change and/or plastic crystalline material. The first polymer acts as a carrier for the thermal stabilizing material during formation of the fiber, and both the first and second polymers effectively enclose the thermal stabilizing material within the fiber thereby preventing its leakage. The fiber may be of the sheath-core or "island-in-the-sea" type, and fabrics manufactured from such fibers exhibit enhanced insulating properties at desired temperature ranges. Methods for manufacturing the fiber as well as fabrics formed from various types of fibers are also disclosed.

A thermal barrier comprises a first barrier layer, a second barrier layer, and a temperature regulating material positioned between the first barrier layer and the second barrier layer. The temperature regulating material comprises a solid/solid phase change material in a powdered form, and the first barrier layer is bonded to the second barrier layer to enclose the temperature regulating material within the thermal barrier. The thermal barrier may be used or incorporated in various products or applications where thermal management is desired. A stabilized phase change composition comprises a phase change material and a stabilizing agent selected from the group consisting of antioxidants and thermal stabilizers. The stabilizing agent provides oxidative or thermal stabilizing to the phase change material. The stabilized phase change composition may be used or incorporated in a variety of process (e.g., melt spinning processes, extrusion processes, injection molding processes, and so forth) to form articles having enhanced reversible thermal properties. Exemplary articles that may be formed include, by way of example and not by limitation, synthetic fibers (e.g., nylon fibers, polyester fibers, polyethylene fibers, polypropylene fibers, and multi-component fibers), fabric materials, textiles, films, foams, sheets, pellets, granules, rods, and injection molded articles.
