    Abstract: A handheld data processing device having three functional components assembled in a sliding configuration. A processor module is mechanically coupled to two sliding covers. The processor module houses circuits for performing the functions of data processing and may also include a display and input/output functionality. The two sliding covers provide protection for the processor module and may include input/output transducers such as a keypad, speaker or microphone. Embodiments of the handheld data processing device include a handheld computer, wireless telephone and handheld video display. Used as a telephone, the sliders may house a speaker and a microphone.

    Abstract: A portable viewing and computing apparatus. In one embodiment, the present invention is comprised of a bus, a memory unit coupled to the bus, and a processor coupled to the bus. The memory unit is for storing data and instructions. The processor is for processing data and instructions. The portable viewing and computing apparatus is further comprised of a display device coupled to the bus. The display device is comprised of a viewing panel viewable from a front side and a back side. The portable viewing and computing apparatus is further comprised of a display device controller coupled to the bus. The display device controller is for sensing the orientation and rotation of the display device, and in response thereto, for controlling and rendering data on the display device.

    Abstract: A method of providing a zoom feature for a handheld computer is described. T he method uses a combination of software and hardware to provide the display zo om without using significant processor resources, or adding dedicated zooming hardware to the display. The method includes storing the image for the displ ay in a memory and using the processor and the memory controller to store the image so that when it is retrieved by the display controller, for transfer t o the display circuit, it is already zoomed in a fist direction. The method al so includes using a pixel replication circuit to provide the replication of pixels in the other direction. The pixel replication cicuit takes a row of pixels and doubles each pixel in the row. This combination allows for the consumption of relatively little processing resources and does not require extensive additional hardware. In some embodiments, the operating system software and other software that writes to the display memory is modified so that write operations occur multiple times to provide the zoom effect. In other embodiments, the display software is modified to leave empty rows in t he display memory. A memory access controller can map a request by the display controller for pixel data from an empty row onto the corresponding row with pixel data.
