Abstract:
The invention relates to the provision of an internet capability as a function of a broadcast data receiver included in or connected to a display screen as part of a television set. The display screen of the television set is used to display a series of user selected internet window display but can only display one internet window at a time, typically of a page from a website, at a time. However several window displays can be open and available for user selection for display at any time. In accordance with the invention an information display is generated and displayed on screen which allows information identifying each of the display windows available for user selection to be shown to the user and, in one embodiment, selected from the display screen using the broadcast data receiver remote control facility.
Abstract:
The invention relates to the generation of a display on a display screen, such as that of a television set. The display includes an internet web page, selected for display by a user. The web page includes a display window for a video display generated from video data. The web page and video data are received by a broadcast data receiver connected to the display screen. In accordance with the invention the display window is provided of a predetermined size which is compared with the size of the video display to be shown at that time. If the video display will not fit into the display window, newly set dimensions are generated for the display window thereby allowing the video display to be shown in its entirety and without the need for cropping or any other editing features to be performed.
Abstract:
A remote control handset (10) is provided for remote operation of a first item of electrical apparatus, such as a television set (2). The handset (10) has means for sending a signal to the TV set (2) to control at least one function thereof. The remote control handset (10) operates at least one further item of electrical apparatus, such as a broadcast data receiver (BDR) (4), and the TV set and the BDR communicate via a SCART connector. The remote control handset (10) is able to operate the BDR and the TV set by actuating the function switching pin (pin 8) (14) of the SCART connector.
Abstract:
The invention which is the subject of this application is to provide for the dynamic adjustment of the display of a graphic display on a display screen, such as that of a television set. Typically, the display screen shows a video display such as that of a television programme generated from received video data such as via a broadcast data receiver, DVD, VCR or the like. On occasion and typically in response to a user selection a graphic display can be generated and overlaid on the video display to provide information to the user. Changes in the video display to take into account different video display formats and/or the particular format of the display screen can cause the graphic display to be unacceptable but this is avoided in the current invention which allows the graphic display to be altered with respect to the format such that it is visible and in a preferred form.
Abstract:
Channel selection procedure for a mobile communication device A method of controlling a mobile communication device, such as a mobile telephone, to operate at or over one or more predetermined frequency values or ranges depending on the geographical location. The method includes the steps of determining where the mobile communication device is in terms of geographical location using GSM network information, identifying frequency values or ranges available in the geographical location at which the device can operate and configuring the mobile communication device to operate at one of the identified frequency values or ranges.
Abstract:
A broadcast data receiver (BDR) is provided and a method of using the BDR for the production of a pseudo stable reference control for the reliable generation of composite video signals. The BDR receives video, audio and/or auxiliary data from a broadcaster can stored a part of all of the data in storage means, typically in the form of a hard disk drive. When the BDR is deriving video data from the hard disk due to the BDR being disconnected from the signal feed from the broadcaster, the BDR uses a pseudo stable reference produced by deriving one or more values from stable frequency information embedded in incoming data. The pseudo stable reference is used to control the frequency of a VCXO in the BDR, thereby allowing accurate color sub-carrier frequency generation for the generation of a final video output. The one or more values can be average stable reference control values extracted from the incoming data or the one or more values can be derived from locking the frequency of the VCXO to an off air incoming data stream.
Abstract:
The invention relates to the simultaneous operation of items of electrical apparatus, such as but not exclusively, a broadcast data receiver and a DECT telephone system. A problem with this type of apparatus is that the operating frequencies of the same can overlap and in turn cause interference in the operation of the respective items. The invention provides a method for identifying the overlap of the RF ranges of the apparatus, and having identified the same, adjusting the operating characteristics of one of the items to allow the interference to be avoided or minimized and the opportunity for the items of apparatus to be combined into one unit.
Abstract:
A mobile communications device control system is provided. The system is for use with a device capable of receiving and transmitting data in the form of calls or messages. The device is provided with receiving means for receiving a signal from a location (2), processing the signal and altering the operating condition of the device in accordance with the received signal. The signal emitted from the location (2) is effective within a localised, determinable area (8) of the location, thereby providing a localised controlling effect on the operation of the device.
Abstract:
The invention to which this application relates is to improvements in electronic programme guides (EPG) which are service provided, in digital broadcast data television systems, to users of the system to indicate to the user the programmes available for selection at the instant of viewing or in the future. The invention provides additional useful and practical information relating to a user selected programme in the form of video and/or audio and/or auxiliary information via an on-screen display.
Abstract:
A broadcast data receiver (BDR) (10) and method of use of the same is provided. The BDR (10) receives data from a broadcaster at a remote location and processes and decodes the data to provide video, audio and/or auxiliary data. The BDR (10) is provided with a reception port/slot (8) for a SIM card (2) from a mobile phone. A smart card reader reads and processes the data stored on said SIM card memory, thereby allowing the SIM card data to be stored, viewed and/or utilized via the BDR (10) and/or display screen (14) connected or integrally formed with the BDR (10).
