Abstract: A composition comprising the extract of Zizyphus jujube seed is provided to inhibit oxidation, mutation induced by mutation-inducing chemicals and growth of liver cancer cells, colon carcinoma cells, blood cancer cells and promyelocytic leukemia cells, and promote growth of normal liver cells. An anti-mutagenic and anti-cancer composition comprises the extract of Zizyphus jujube seed which is prepared by extracting Zizyphus jujube seeds with water at 90-100 deg. C for 8 hours or with 99% methanol for 8 hours, and filtering and concentrating the water or methanol extract under reduced pressure, wherein the anti-oxidant effect is measured by reacting acetic acid with antioxidant solution, and measuring absorbance; the anti-mutagenic effect is determined by treating Salmonella typhimurium TA100 with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine(MNNG) and 4-nitroquinoline-N-oxide(4NQO); and the anti-cancer effect is determined by measuring cytotoxicity of MTT(3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) for cancer cells and normal cells.
