Abstract: A protective cover is described. The protective cover can be releasably attached to an electronic device having a display with a topmost protective layer and configured to present visual content. The protective cover comprises a flap. The flap 5 comprises a first surface and a second surface, the first surface configured to come into direct contact with the topmost protective layer of the display in a closed configuration. The flap also comprises a first magnet, and a second magnet separate from the first magnet, the first and second magnets disposed between the first and second surfaces. Only in the closed configuration, a first magnetic field from the first 10 magnet passes through the topmost protective layer and is detectable by the electronic device and a second magnetic field from the second magnet passes through the topmost protective layer and is suitable for magnetically attaching the flap to the electronic device at the topmost protective layer. Abstract: Electronic device 1100, e.g. a tablet computer, has a display overlaid by an outer protective layer 1106 and a magnetic element. A cover 1300 for the device has a single piece flap comprising a first magnetic element 1326 in a first portion 1304 and a magnetic element 1324 in a second portion 1310 opposite to the first portion. The second portion is also pivotably attachable to the tablet. The magnetic element in the tablet and first magnetic element in the cover form a magnetic circuit through the outside protective layer 1106 to attach the flap to the outer layer. The cover forms a structure for supporting the tablet in an operational orientation when the flap is folded such that the first magnet 1326 and the magnetic element 1324 form a magnetic circuit. Magnetic sensor 118 detects when the flap is in contact to the layer and present visual content accordingly.

Abstract: An optical coating includes multiple layers of different materials and thicknesses and is disposed proximate a transparent display cover for an electronic device display. The optical coating transmits most visible light, reflects most non-visible light and substantially absorbs blackbody radiation generated from within the electronic device. The optical coating can be readily removable from the electronic device display either alone or in combination with a removable transparent display cover. The multiple layers comprise two or more materials having alternating low and high indices of refraction. The arrangement and thicknesses of the layers are designed based upon the thickness and optical properties of the transparent display cover. in another embodiment, an internal optical coating. The internal optical coating can also be specially formulated to replace a typical internal anti-reflective coating proximate the visual display unit.

Abstract: Protective cover 1300 for a display of a tablet 1100, comprising: a body portion; a first magnetic element 1326 detected by Hall Effect sensor (HFX) 118 in the tablet when the body portion is secured to the display in a closed configuration by second magnetic element 1402; wherein the detection alters the operating state of the tablet; an attachment mechanism 1340 for pivotally attaching the body portion to the tablet. When the HFX sensor detects or does not detect the magnetic field, the display is disabled or enabled for presenting visual content, respectively. The visual content is presented only at a revealed portion (2102, fig 27B) of the display in a partial open configuration. The body portion comprises a first segment 1304 embedding the first magnetic element; a second segment 1310 with a rigid magnetically attractable insert 1324; a connecting folding portion. In a folded configuration the first and second segments are folded atop each other to support the tablet via magnetic attachment. The body portion comprises a laminate structure with: an inner microfiber layer providing cleaning contact with the display, an outer protective layer; an intervening layer of knitted material aiding in adhesively coupling the inner and outer layers.

Abstract: A portable computing device is disclosed. The portable computing device can take many forms such as a laptop computer, a tablet computer, and so on. The portable computing device can include a single piece housing and a display module. The display module can include a protective top glass cover that is bonded to a plastic display frame and surrounded by a seal frame. The display module can also include a display panel and its associated circuitry suspended from the display frame below the protective glass cover. The display module is coupled to the single piece housing using mounting clips in a manner that allows the display module to move relative to the single piece housing during an impact event. The plastic display frame can include inserts that provide structural support near openings in the single piece housing.
