Abstract: The invention relates to polyolefin fibrils which have been modified by means of an oxide, hydroxide or silicate of an element from main group II to IV of the periodic table or a sub-group element. They have a high degree of beating and a large specific surface area and are particularly suitable as asbestos substitute. They are prepared from solutions of the polyolefins in an organic solvent which contain the admixed modifier, in a process in which the solutions are either a) heated under pressure and cooled under adiabatic relaxation, during which the fibrils are deposited, or b) introduced into a precipitation bath under the action of shear forces, during which the fibrils precipitate.

Abstract: Process for producing fibrils (short fibres) by introducing solutions of vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or styrene polymers into tetrahydrofuran, 1,4-dioxane or methyl ethyl ketone in, for example, water under the action of shearing forces, the polymer solutions used being such additionally containing oxides, silicates, carbonates or sulphates of di- to tetravalent metals, preferably calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, alumina, calcium silicate, silica, cement produced therefrom, silicon tetrachloride and/or the reaction product of cement or calcium oxide with silicon tetrachloride in an amount of 1 to 900% by weight, relative to the solid polymer, and fibrils obtained by this process.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of thermoplastic fibrids by shredding a solution of a polymeric thermoplastic in a field of shearing forces, said shredding being performed by passing a homogeneous solution of the thermoplastic in an organic solvent, which is a solvent for said thermoplastic only at elevated temperature, through a nozzle having one or more orifices in the form of an annular die into a zone having the form of an impulse exchange chamber which has a mean inlet diameter of from 2 to 20 times that of the circular area equal to the total cross-sectional area of the nozzle orifices through which the homogeneous solution is extruded and a length of from 2 to 30 times its hydraulic diameter, in which chamber the homogeneous solution is cooled such that the thermoplastics material precipitates and in which a turbulent field of shear forces exists, this being produced by the introduction of one or more jets of a gaseous or liquid medium, which jets are located centrally to the annular orifice, into said impulse exchange chamber at a velocity of from 5 to 500 m/s.

Abstract: Moulded articles, lining and sealing sheets and carpet backings are made from compositions of (a) 100 parts weight bitumen of 1-150 penetration (DIN 1 995) as deacidified petroleum distillation residue containing (1) 20-40% aromatic, (2) 16-25% naphthenic bituminous hydrocarbons, (3) 27-45% Ca naphthenates and sulphonates, (4) 11-20% Ca(OH)2 and CaSO4 and (5) 0.5-5% S(1 to 5 = 100%); (b) 25-200 parts weight ethylene or propylene homopolymer or copolymer of (b1) 30-97% ethylene and (b2) 3-70% vinyl ester of 2-3C alkanecarboxylic acid and/or 1-4C alkyl ester of 3-4C alkanecarboxylic acid (b1 + b2 = 100) and optionally (c) usual additives.
