Abstract: A method is described for making a monolithic polymeric filter membrane having a filter layer that includes micron-scale precision-shaped pores and a support layer that includes a precision-shaped porous support structure for the filter layer. The method comprises forming the filter layer by removing selected material from one side of a polymeric film to define the micron-scale precision-shaped pores of the filter layer; and forming the support layer by removing selected material from the other side of said film to define the precision-shaped porous support structure. The pores of the filter layer communicate with the porous support structure to allow for the passage of filtrate therethrough.

Abstract: A medical infusion system including a lineset used for delivering fluid, such as a liquid medicinal substance, to a patient from a source such as an IV bag (18) through operation of an electric component (30) is disclosed. The preferred infusion system (10) includes disposable tubing (12) having first and second ends (16,17) attachable to at least a first and second medical component, and a power supply (14), such as a fuel cell, battery, battery pack, power paper, or a combination of the same, attached to the tubing (12) wherein the power supply (14) is configured to be activated to provide electric power to the electric component (30). Such configuration may include the use of an activating member, such as a fluid pump. The preferred power supply (14) is a fuel cell (32) having a reactant source and a barrier (54) separating the reactant source from a reaction chamber (46). The barrier (54) is preferably selected from the group consisting of a frangible membrane, a tear seal, and any combination of the two. Additionally, the fuel cell (or the power supply, generally) may be integral to the tubing (12) of the lineset or may be configured to fit within the fluid pump (30). This allows the activating member to be made integral to the fluid pump (30) such that the insertion of the fuel cell(32) into the pump (30) will defeat the barrier (54) and activate the fuel cell (32) to create power.

Abstract: De acuerdo con un aspecto de la presente invencion, se proporciona una membrana monolitica polimerica para filtros que comprende una capa de filtro que incluye poros de escala de micrones en formas exactas apto para una gran variedad de aplicaciones de filtracion, y una capa de soporte que incluye una estructura de soporte porosa de forma exacta para la capa del filtro. Como se vera en mas detalle mas adelante, la membrana para filtro de la presente invencion se puede fabricar de una solo pelicula polimerica o de multiples peliculas polimericas que se unen, por ejemplo, por calor para formar una sola membrana monolitica sin ninguna linea discernible de distincion entre las capas del filtro y las de apoyo. En cualquiera version, la presente invencion permite que la capa del filtro sea muy delgada, lo cual permite la formacion de muy pequenos poros de escala de micrones de formas exactas, de porosidad relativamente alta sin una fragilidad exagerada de la membrana.

Abstract: Systems and methods for processing blood use at least one fluid activated pump and at least one fluid activated valve. The systems and methods apply positive and negative fluid pressures to operate the pump and valve. Different pressure conditions are applied to the pump and the valve, to insure that a valve used in conjunction with a pump is not overcome by the pressure applied to operate the pump, and that both the valve and pump are not overcome by normal system processing pressures.
