    Abstract: Amino cpds. are prepd. by the continuous redn. of nitro cpds. with H2 at high pressure, by trickling the reaction mixt. over a fixed Pd catalyst supported on a spinel. The nitro cpd., opt. mixed with a liquid diluent (pref. the amine reaction prodt.), is pref. trickled over the catalyst at 50-250 degrees C in a tube reactor, the heat of reaction being removed by a coolant surrounding the tube. The nitro cpd. is pref. nitrobenzene, di- or tri-nitrobenzene, nitrotoluene, di- or tri-nitrotoluene, nitrochlorobenzene, nitrophenol, nitrodiphenylamine or nitropropane. The process can also be used for reductive alkylation, by adding an aldehyde or ketone, pref. acetone, during hydrogenation. The prodt. can be used, e.g., for the prodn. of isocyanates and plant-protection agents.

    Abstract: 1364526 t-Caprolactone BAYER AG 29 July 1971 [1 Aug 1970] 35732/71 Heading C2C t-Caprolactone is obtained by oxidizing cyclohexanol with molecular oxygen in the liquid phase, hydrolysing the initially formed cyclohexanone peroxide to cyclohexanone and H 2 O 2 , extracting the H 2 O 2 with H 2 O, adding to the resulting aqueous H 2 O 2 solution at least one compound of the formula removing substantially all of the H 2 O, reacting the reaction mixture with an aliphatic fatty acid or with a compound which produces an aliphatic fatty acid under the reaction conditions, optionally in the presence of an esterification catalyst, dehydrating once again, and reacting the resulting per-carboxylic acid, either unchanged, after neutralization of the esterification catalyst or after purification of the percarboxylic acid, with the cyclohexanone formed in the first stage to form t-caprolactone, wherein m, n and p are 0 or 1 provided that m, n and p are not simultaneously 0, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 represent optionally substituted straight or branched-chain C 1- C 6 alkyl or optionally substituted C 4- C 6 cycloalkyl radicals up to two of the radicals R 1 , R 2 and R 3 may represent hydrogen, one of the radicals R 1 , R 2 and R 3 may represent an optionally substituted phenyl radical, or R 1 together with R 2 may represent a C 2-7 alkylene radical. The molar ratio of H 2 O 2 to carboxylic acid is preferably in the range from 1 : 1À1 to 1 : 1À5 and a 1À5-3 molar excess of cyclohexanone is preferably used. The dehydration reactions may be effected by distillation under reduced pressure with the aid of an inert diluent. A suitable form of apparatus for continuous operation of the process is described.

    Abstract: 2-methylene propane prepn. Title cpd. is prepd. by reacting isobutene, oxygen and acetic acid in the vapour phase at 50-250 degrees C over a Pd-contg. catalyst, partially or completely removing components boiling at >150 degrees C at normal pressure, and returning part or all components boiling at 150 degrees C at normal pressure, to the reaction. The reaction can be conducted in tubular reactors 4-8m long with internal diameters of 20-50mm. The product is useful for the production of 1,3-dihydroxy-2-methylene propane by hydrolysis.

    Abstract: Propionaldehyde is prepd. by passing allyl alcohol, in the vapour phase and at high temp. over a catalyst contg. Pd, in the absence of oxygen. The reaction temp. may be 50-250 degrees C pref. 100-200 degrees C and at 0 to 10 atmos. pressure. The catalyst contains Pd as metal or compounds, pref. on a support such as Al2O3 or SiO2, and may contain other metals or their compounds, particularly Au. The gaseous reaction products are cooled to below 50 degrees C and the liquid propionaldehyde phase formed is separated from the gaseous phase which is recycled.
