Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problem that a transmissive display has to be used as an image display unit in a conventional stereoscopic image display device, so that a degree of freedom is not provided in selecting displays. SOLUTION: The stereoscopic image display device includes the image display unit 1 wherein a plurality of horizontal pixel strings 1d1-1d3 comprising a plurality of horizontally arranged pixels D1-D9 is vertically disposed, so as to display a plurality of images respectively corresponding to a plurality of observing positions E1-E9, through the use of pixel groups being different at every image; a mask member 3 wherein a plurality of horizontal opening strings 1m1-1m3 comprising horizontally arranged opening parts by prescribed pattern is vertically disposed, so as to allow lights from the respective horizontal pixel strings to reach the respective observing positions through the horizontal opening strings corresponding to the horizontal pixel strings; and a restricting member 2 for restricting the lights from the respective horizontal pixel strings, to be made incident to the horizontal opening strings other than the horizontal opening strings corresponding to the horizontal pixel strings or the horizontal pixel strings being equivalent to them among the plurality of horizontal opening strings. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a display optical system and an imaging optical system have a wide angle of view by increasing the power of the optical system to constitute the display optical system or imaging optical system by using a small-sized image display element. SOLUTION: The display optical system which guides light from an original picture 3 to the eye of an observer or a projected surface is provided with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd surfaces as optical surfaces and has a 1st surface A which has at least reflecting operation and a 2nd surface C which reflects a light beam reflected by the 1st surface toward the 1st surface again, and a center view angle main light beam which is made incident on the 1st surface again is reflected to travel to the opposite side from the last time about the normal of the surface at its hit point. The imaging optical system which guides light from a subject to an imaging surface has a 1st surface which has at least operating and a 2nd surface which reflects the light beam reflected by the 1st surface to the 1st surface again, and the center field angle main light beam which is made incident on the 1st surface again is reflected to travel to the opposite side from the last time about the normal of the surface at its hit point.

SOLUTION: The horizontal stripe image made into one image by alternately arranging a right stripe pixel Ri and a left stripe pixel Li obtained by respectively dividing a parallax image for right eye and a parallax image for left eye into many horizontal stripe shape pixels is displayed on a display device 4. The directivity is imparted to the luminous flux outgoing from a light source means 1 by the cylindrical lens 3, and the horizontal stripe image is projected, and the luminous flux is separated into two regions, so that the horizontal stripe image is visualized by the observer 54 as the stereoscopic image. In this case, a 1st direction and a 2nd direction crossing the 1st direction almost at right angles are set in the formation plane of this virtual image, pieces of luminous flux emitted from the respective pixels have angles of divergence in the 1st and 2nd directions controlled, pixel by pixel, by a divergence angle converting means provided nearby them to generate pieces of luminous flux having different angles of divergence between the 1st and 2nd directions, and they are made incident on the optical system 2.

SOLUTION: The light emitted from a back light 1 is deflected through apertures HR having centers at the prescribed position with respect to the optical axes of respective cylindrical lenses constituting a lenticular lens sheet 3 on a mask 2, is condensed to the linear from perpendicular to the region corresponding to the observer's right eye ER and is made incident on the right eye ER. The luminous fluxed thereof are modulated by the right stripe pixels R1 displayed on the display device 4 and the right stripe pixels R1 are observed by the right eye ER. The transmitted luminous fluxes past the apertures HL of the mask 2 with respect to the section corresponding to the scanning line under one signal line are deflected by the lenticular lens sheet 3 and further modulated by the left strip pixels L2 displayed on the display device 4. These luminous fluxed are condensed to the linear form perpendicular to the region corresponding to the position of the left eye EL are made incident on the left eye EL.

When a stereoscopic vision is obtained by making the stripe picture element corresponding to each of left and right eyes of the stripe image 11A incident on the left and right eyes of an observer by the spatial light modulation element 2, the synchroni-zation for every picture element or every scanning line is performed on a scanning line performing a scanning by making the display 1 and the spatial light modulation element 2 correspond, and the stripe image 11A and the opening pattern are displayed.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To make it possible to display stereoscopic images with high resolution by using a parallax barrier system by controlling the electric signal to be impressed on a phase shift member in synchronization with the display of striped images, thereby controlling the polarization direction of transmitted light. CONSTITUTION: The light emitted from an LCD display 1 having, for example, a back light source is linearly polarized light. The prescribed position in front of the display 1 is provided with the phase shift member (π cell) 30 which imparts two different phase shift states to the transmitted light by the electric signal and further, the prescribed position in front of the phase shift member 30 is provided with polarizing optical elements 2 alternately lined up with two polarizing plates having the striped optical axes long in a perpendicular direction intersecting orthogonally with each other in a horizontal direction. The right and left parallactic images from a parallactic image source 15 are split and synthesized and the striped images 11 are displayed on the display 1. The polarization direction of the light transmitted through the phase shift member 30 is controlled by controlling the electric signal impressed on the phase shift member 30 in synchronization with the display.
