Abstract: Production of dihydroketoisophorone comprises reaction of beta -isophorone with an organic percarboxylic acid. The mixture of initially-formed beta -isophorone epoxide and isomeric 4-hydroxyisophorone is isomerized in situ either thermally or in presence of an acid catalyst or a salt. Production of dihydroketoisophorone (2,2,6-trimethylcyclohexane-1,4-dione) (I) comprises reaction of beta -isophorone (3,5,5-trimethylcyclohex-3-en-1-one) (II) with an organic percarboxylic acid in the form of a non-aqueous solution, at 0-200 deg C in an inert organic solvent. The per-acid is formed in a separate equilibrium reaction and absorbed or extracted with the oxidation solvent. The mixture of initially-formed beta -isophorone epoxide (III) and isomeric 4-hydroxyisophorone (HIP) (IV) is isomerized in situ either thermally or in presence of an acid catalyst or a salt.

Abstract: Production of alpha -tocopherol acetate in a recirculating process involves condensation of trimethylhydroquinone and isophytol in presence of a catalyst system comprising zinc halide and an aqueous protonic acid and optionally an elemental metal in a polar solvent/water mixture and subsequent acylation of the resultant alpha -tocopherol. Production of alpha -tocopherol acetate (I) in a recirculating process involves condensation of trimethylhydroquinone and isophytol in presence of a catalyst (II) system comprising zinc halide (IIa) and an aqueous protonic acid (IIb) and optionally an elemental metal in a polar solvent/water mixture extractable or miscible with water. The alpha -tocopherol initially obtained is separated from the aqueous catalyst phase and esterified with an acylating agent. The solution of (II) obtained after working up by aqueous extraction is regenerated and the solution containing acetic acid is returned to the reaction. (II) is concentrated and reintroduced into the reaction in liquid form.

Process for the preparation of 3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexa-3-en-1-one (.beta.-isophorone). 2.1 The invention relates to a process for the preparation of the title compound by isomerisation of 3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexa-2-en-1-one (.alpha.-isophorone) in the liquid phase in the presence of a salt-like or organometallic catalyst. 2.2 Through the use of catalytic quantities of alkali-metal salts or alkaline-earth salts and of their organometallic compounds, and without addition of a further auxiliary substance, the space-time yield in the preparation of .beta.-isophorone is successfully raised to a level suitable for industrial application by means of a reasonably-priced, generally available catalyst and at the same time a known per se process is distinctly improved. 2.3 .beta.-Isophorone is particularly suitable as an intermediate product for the preparation of ketoisophorone.
